that 18-200VR is such a horrible lens, considering the price!

it is actually an "ok" walk-about zoom, especially the zoom range is great, but max aperture is slow, which is run-of-the-mill and optical performance is also run-of-the-mill. all these are fine, just not fine when considering the price (a friend bought at $1,200).

IMHO this should be a $600-800 lens.

I think most people who uses the 18-200 is paying for convinence of not having to change lens when walking about in the streets shooting. I agree with you it's not work $1200.

its just like I condemn the EF-S 17-85 IS. Its actually not a bad lens, just not good at > $1,000 (in those days).

    I disagree...
There are so many happy owners of 18-200VR (I knew at least 10) and no one regretted buying it.There are always Sigma or Tamron alternatives if price is a major concern.
Every company can set the expected price, but its the market force that maintain the price.

there were lots of happy EF-S 17-85 owners too. I recently heard there were 7 of these being let go on ClubSnap

when I first got the 17-85 I was pretty happy about it. however soon I learned about CA and bokeh and so on, and it starts to dawn on me that there are better things out there for the money. so the moral of the story: "happiness are not forever, only diamonds are eternal."

I better copyright this before the jewellery companies grab it

If I were Tiffany I would engage Scarlett Johansson to pout her lips and say (while showing off a 5 carat flawless pink stone): "Happiness are not Eternal, only Diamonds are Forever."

    sure stampede lah…
