This ram look sick to me...... The eye is too big & not proportional to the head.

Actually I have one ram with the shape of the head exactly like the one shown in the pic. The fish is healthy and a hungry beast..LOL [] . Maybe its because of poor genes from the parents thats why the shape is distorted.

The shape is due to stunted growth... probably due to poor genes or mal-nutrition. Otherwise, colouration looks like a Ram.
Vincent - AQ is for everyone, but not for 'u' and 'mi'.
Why use punctuation? See what a difference it makes:
A woman, without her man, is nothing.
A woman: without her, man is nothing.

    taken off the black book

    microgeophagus altispinosus

    latin words >altus<=high and >spinosus<=prickly.

High spikes on the dorsal fin.

Erm from the picture above the fish seems pretty okay, their colouration for this species of microgeophagus is said to be like that, with no cross breeding to form this new species. The above should be the one spot speciment while there is another with 2 spots.

This fish is found at at bolivia thus the name bolivian rams came about..they are aslo found at Rio Mamoré(oh thats where my fav a.mamore came from)[]

Price wise i'm not very sure but this kind of rams isn't as popular as the common rams or even the blue rams which may result in low cost price IMO.
    Cheers!

benetay, slight correction on the sci. name.
Microgeophagus altispinosa is the correct name..
That is indeed a bolivian ram..
Usually cheaper than the german ram because not as colourful..

This kind of Ram has been captive breeding in fishfarms of SEA for many years. Due to intensive in-breeding, the quality of the ram drop drastically which badly affect the popularity of the Bolivian ram. In fact, the wild-caught Bolivian Rams are as beautiful as blue Ram.

    The sci name is correct.
    Microgeophagus altisponosus
Altisppinosa-buttefly just another way to rename it using those sci names.

    Just like Apistogramma maciliensis
    mamoré-apistogramma

    Cheers!
