    Hi all

I have always wondered whether lens hood is worth using. From what i know of lens hood, it basically helps in lens glare and protects the lens. Thus I can understand for landscape pics, having the lens hood is an advantage.

But for macro photography which is sometimes done under the shade of the trees, is there a need for it? I can understand the reason of protecting the lens. But what other benefits are there?

Do all of you use it?

I kept my lens hood in the cupboard since day 1. Don't need the extra length to scare away the bugs. Beside, I don't really understand what people mean by using lens hood to protect the lens. It's not like you can go so close to the subject anyway.

While taking candid pictures during wedding, children might bump you & hit your lens. I'm not sure if anybody encounter this, children like to put their hands/arms into a hollow object. Thus the lens hood act like a hollow object.

I believe the hood comes with a purpose. The lens hood can break the fall of your camera+lens a little before hitting onto your filter which reduces the impact.

I remembered posting about my camera falling from the boot of the car. smash lens flat onto the concrete and bouncing the body which eventually landed in a lens upwards position. i was just lighting up. The hood broke the fall just a little before hitting hard on the B+W which cracks. Nothing happen to the lens. The hood got a deep cut.

Macro photography i'm not sure normally shooting fishes in almost dark room. Can't help much, still prefer to protect my lens.

So nowadays i prefer to keep it on than not. To have it rather than regret it.
    Cheers!

Yeah, that's one thing that lens hood is good at. Making your lens look bigger than it actually is. Whether that's a good thing or not depends on what you're trying to achieve.

Should have used a vertical grip. Showing the chicken wing scares off the babe in conjunction with the lens
    Cheers!
