I've been using Hoya UV guard filter and Tokina UV filter on my lenses since day one. Will the UV filter degrade the picture quality? Does the UV filter brand a matter? Which one is a good brand?

Accept no compromise, B+W MRC is the way to go.

If you spend a bomb on an L lens, then nothing less than an M+W UV Haze (note that Skylight filters are tinted). Other lens a good Hoya MC ought to be commensurate.

B+W got very hard glass, lesser chance of it smashing to pieces even if your lens is to drop from a height.

I fully agree on the logic of spending a bomb on L lens might as well protect it properly. Imagine you use an unbranded filter and when you drop your camera the filter smashes and cuts the front element of your L lens. Which is more expensive? The Lens of the filter?

I was blessed to have you people in the community that educated me on the filter issue. If it wasn't for B+W my L might have not been able to go through such an ordeal.

    Cheers for B+W.

i also read that B+W filters are easier to clean than Hoya.
which prompted me to get them.
however, i'm unable to verify this as i don't have a Hoya to compare.
    is this true?

I think cleaning the filter doesn't have any differences, but the quality of the glass is much better. I heard the nikon filters are also quite popular as well

does the B+W UV filter come in different model? HOYA come with different type Standard, HMC (Hoya Multi Coated), Super HMC and Ultra Series, I guess the last one whould be the best

    shadow,
the Hoya series you just mention was also another reason i chose B+W.
when i was at the shop i couldn't decide which was better.
and remembering mention of the quality and ease of cleaning at CS, i got the B+W's.

for a reference, a B+W UV Haze filter is $90 for 72mm, which is well worth it if you put it on a $2,400 lens.

B+W UV filters are generally considered quite cheap. If you take CPL( Circular polarizer) than it's quite expensive. Yes nikon filters are very expensive & good too. Almost comparable to B+W or similar.

We should not forget Canon filters too, they're quite affordable too.

Regarding the ease of cleaning, i've both hoya & B+W i will like to say that cleaning B+W is easier in terms of quality of the filter. B+W has a smoother feeling when cleaning whereas cleaning hoya filters a little rough. It's like running a cloth over a very dry glass .

    2cts worth.

    Cheers!

I am still looking for B+W CPL for 72 and 77mm.

Choy, I think I have a 77mm B+W CPL too.. I go back and check. If you want, can lend it to you.
