Perhaps, the high mortality rate may be turning people off. No longer keeping them for the moment, since losing them sometime ago.

I didn't see any new species for a long time now. I just spoke to an LFS the other day about them, and they mention having trouble keeping them alive, long enough for someone to pick them up. Seems like only Matano blue dots, being the hardiest, is available on sale (for now).

    See this:
    http://www.aquaticquotient.com/forum...lts&pollid=128

Survival rate is skewed towards high side in the poll ... but I heard death and death amongs shop sellers, hobbyists and suppliers even the among hardiest ones.

The solid black one is rare. I only managed to get 3 of them... 2 went to heaven left one. They hide very well, will try to take a pic...when I am back in Indonesia.

Saw various species in C328 yesterday.. Those who still want to try can get them there.

Guys, please kindly start a new thread if necessary should you all need to discuss stock availability. These threads should be geared towards discussion of the fauna and their care or husbandry aspects. Thanks.

I saw a source from crustaforum.com saying that the real water parameters in Lake Matano is kH 0->1 , gH 1->2 , while most of us are keeping under high kH and gH. May be that is the reason of high death rate?

its kind of tricky and complicated to give them high ph but low KH, maybe thats why its hard to keep them.

I am not sure how true the values are or the parameters, I tends to believe a lake like Matano ought to have a higher kH then 1 and the Gh is also higher.

I'll post more on what I have read about the habitats later, but I don't think kH and gH are major issues. German aquarists seem to have managed to breed some species with variable kH and gH values.

It may be just well be the species able to breed worldwide. I think is the species in concern, not such much of the water parameters but does not mean not at all.

The Logeman brothers were in Sulawesi on May 2008, this is the water parameters of Lake Matano they found:

    Temp. 29,5
    Leitwert 191 - 227
    PH 8,6
    gH 7
    kH 5
    NH4 0
    NH3 0
    NO2 0
    NO3 0
    PO4 1,0
    FE 0
    CU 0

Actually, the point that I am driving is that, gH and kH may not the lone/sole cause of deaths (IMHO of course).

Breeding is secondary, but if the German aquarists are able to do that, then they are successful in keeping them alive in the first place, in different gH and kH. However, this only applies to certain species. So expanding on the rather general assumption above, it seems like different species are more difficult than others, and all of them probably have different specific requirements.

If anyone is interested, there is an article on Sulawesi shrimp in the July issue of Practical Fishkeeping magazine, contributed by Chris Lukhaup (of www.crusta10.de). The ecosystem of the lakes does not seem to be as straight forward as we think. Most aquarists (including myself) tend to be keeping different species of Sulawesi shrimp together, which would mean compromising some ideal requirements of certain species.

I think this may be the root of the problem. I have yet to finish reading the article, but would try to summarise here for discussion, if I have the time.

    Hmmm
Seemed like interest has waned over the sulawesi, here are some pictures.

Still cannot keep quite alot of the species alive. They are really sensitive to nitrates.
Except for the white spotted. The rest Maximum time I could keep them alive was 3 months.

Perhaps others would like to share their experience?

Xema, that should be interesting. They do hybridise? Do you know what are the species involved?

That seems to be the impression I got reading around, water needs to be very clean (i.e. no ammonia/nitrite, low nitrate). I will be keeping away from them until my tank has ran for 6 months or more.

I can not be fully sure about if it is a hybrid, some experts told me that colour variation would be a possibility too.

I kept in the same tank where these guys occur Cardenal with Matano Black Tiger.

    Matano Black Tiger

    Cardinal Shrimp

In non-expert opinion I think this shrimp is a cross-breed, looks like they have features of Cardinal and MBT.

    Take a look of this.
