I have decided to attempt breeding guppies. I know most people think of guppies are just food, but I have to start with something easy, besides, I like guppies!
Any hints or tips of the trade for me?
    Thanks in advance,

Hi... Well, personally, i feel that guppies are pretty easy to breed. What i suggest is that u put a male with 2 females 1st. And when the female tummy is big, just seperate it from the other fish and wait for it to give birth. It usually gives birth at night. Remember to have hiding places for the babies in case the mum eats them up! []

are you referring to just "dump them and let there be babies", or seletive breeding of strains and lineage? there are couple of guppy-seow around here (chris and jhseah comes to mind), I'm sure they'll be more than happy to give you some tips and sell you some good parents.
why I don't do garden hybrids and aquarium strains: natural species is a history of Nature, while hybrids are just the whims of Man.

    Hi

    Welcome to AQ

Think there's should be quite a number of breeder at US and Canada, shouldn't have problem getting one or two trio to start off your guppy breeding. They should be able to advise u better on the guppy requirements in your country.

U can also try fishbid.com under guppies for sale.

Well, not selective, but not dump them in and let there be babies either. I want to experiment with various coloured females and snakeskin males. (which are common around here) I really cannot afford show guppies, so good quality lfs ones will have to do.
    Wish me luck!

It's good that you try out with normal lfs guppys.

Just want to share my limited experience with you.
When u buy the guppies, preferably 1 male to 2 females (1trio) for a 1ft tank and 2-3trio for 2ft tank. This ratio is to prevent the female from exhaustion due to the constant chasing.

Another thing to note is your water pH. Guppies prefer neutral to slight alkaline water though some can tolerate slight acidic but try not to go below 6.5.

Once "hit" by the male, the female will take around 3wks to drop her youngs live. Her tummy will get bigger and the noticeable dark gravid spot.
Try to give the frys more hiding space like floating plants or else the cannibal instict of the parents will leave u with zero frys.
Frys would take around 3months to mature and mate again, u can also see the males "colored" up.

Think for your country, u will need a heater to maintain water temperature around 28oC.

Hope that u can continue come and post your updates in
    AQ.
