guppies with long flowy tails might end up having their tails ripped by the apistos
Hi all, Currently i have 3 pairs of apisto inside my 3ft tank but i have about hundreds plus guppys so i'm wandering whether or not i can add guppys with my apisto.. Will they(apisto) chase or bit them???
Thanks if anyone can help? Open to any comment.

How about endlers??? Will they be eaten up??? Because you see bro illumnae my tank 3ftx1.5ftx1.5ft quite big space for 3 pair and i add divider so a pair's space is around 1ftx1.5ftx1.5ft. So i'm wandering whether i can add more colours to my tank a not? If cardinal tetra can put together with apisto maybe it will be fine with guppys too?
Hi..
The endlers' tail will also be ripped off.. Will not be as bad as those long fins ones.. But still you see their fins being ripped off.. Not to mentioned endlers' fries.. Will ended up as free meals for the apistos.. I have endlers mixed with my apistos too.. You will noticed your endlers will decrease slowly in numbers..

So sad to read this guys... But i still have some feeling with my guppys now having headache of where am i going to put them??? Arghhhhh....~~!!!
Actually i should use my 3ft tank add more divider like biotope hor? But i just settle everything so tired and scare of the steps... Like adding water, getting a nicely fitted divider is not easy....
Thanks all for the comment really appreciated. Don't know spell correctly a not???
ben,
A few careless/gramatical mistakes, but still acceptable. Thank you for taking the trouble to avoid using SMS abbreviations in our forums. We appreciate your effort to help us make AQ a better place.
The guppies will not do well together with the Apistogramma species. But if there a lot of them, they might be confused and won't know who to chase. However, this will also stress out the fishes and the dwarf cichlids may not breed for you. Do take note.
Cheers,
I have dwarf cichlids in my tanks! Do you?
Thanks benny,
i'm still learning how to use this AQ to post or write.
At first don't really know that i got so many red cards..! Because i did not check my e-mail and warning post...
alternatively, if you have an aggressive pair of apistos, they will systematically hunt down and kill the fish one by one until only a few fish that they're comfortable with remain alive. this has happened to me with 2 of my apisto pairs, whereby no matter how many T. espei or A. riesei i added, i always ended up with 3 left remaining. every day, one would get killed by the apistos till only 3 remained. after awhile i learnt not to waste money and just left 3 pieces in the tank, and no more deaths occurred.
smart fish, these apistos.
Hi..
True.. Last time my endlers always ended up with 4 females and all males were killed no matter how many times I topped up the tanks with new male endlers.. These apisto seem to attack the males more often maybe cause they are more colourful.. Not to mention fries..
Regards
they seem to only do this with fish that they find threatening (larger fast swimming and colourful fishes probably). the unthreatening ditherfish that i used such as dwarf pencils and boraras brigittae were left alone while the rasbora and tetra populations dwindled
True.. My pencil fish was left alone too.. But think the more colorful pencil fish like coral red might be a threat to them.. The apistos also leave my dwarf puffer alone..
However they will chase each other around sometimes.. The dwarf puffer will try to rip the fins of the apisto first when he sees the apisto didn't notice him.. then the Apisto will start chasing him around the tank whenever he did that.. So cute the two of them..
I used to keep endlers with my caca and they thrive very well, even breed many times. But when I keep them with my nanacara anomala, they become dinner.
I think not all apistos are that crazy only certain breeds.

it's not just certain breeds i think, richard...it depends on the nature of the individual fish. some apistos are just more aggressive than others, even if they're of the same species that's why we say that cichlids are fish with character
So guys the only fishes i can add with my apistos is just dwarf pencils and boraras brigittae if not the rest of the fishes i put in will be in danger right?
I keep pairs of endlers with my ap. elizabethae, ap. bitaeniata, ap. diplotaenia in a 1.5ft tank as dithers without any problems. They even spawn in the tanks. But of course, sometimes you get some biting of the finnages going on especially when the apisto is breeding. So far, no deaths from my account.
On the other hand, its the apisto that will suffer if there are so many guppies in your tank. The apistos will have problem accessing to the food during feeding because the guppies are very quick and voracious eaters. Your apistos stand no chance against them.

Thanks all for your advice, i think i'll get a 2ft tank to place all the guppys instead so i won't have any chances of deaths for my guppys
