Nanacara anomala are very aggressive dwarf cichlids. Try to keep them in bigger tanks. 2ft and above and provide lots of hiding space for the female to hide. I have experienced the male killing the female in a 1.5ft tank. Also, in a tank of Ap. cacatuoides. The fellows chomped off pieces of the tail of the Ap. cacatuoides.

    Eugene,
Thanks. Now that fellow is in a 1 ft cube, no other tank available. Just the couple, a tetra and a female endlers left.
That bugger still chase the female all over the place, but will stop after a while.

Very aggressive fish. Lost quite a few females in a few of my pairs.

However, this fish is full of character and the colors are amazing. Love the metallic blue and green sheen as well as the thin red/white trim on the dorsal.

Richard, do keep us updated on it's development.

    Cheers,
I have dwarf cichlids in my tanks! Do you?

    Richard,

Looking great, didn't had the chance to keep this dwarf cichlid as i was previously focusing on the genus Apistogramma

From the replies i assume that it's an aggressive fish, maybe its ideal to keep it by itself & with lots of cover.

    Cheers!

By the way, mine had ever spawned in a 1 ft setup together with 10 other fishes. I separated the other fishes, but somehow, the fry did survive. I think the female ate them as she was threatened by the fishes from another tank which was visible to her. Shame.

    Cheers,

Richard, is this Nanacara anomala in its natural colour? If it is, then I must say its very impressive! Golden colour is just the right colour spice up some Chinese New Year mood.

Exactly! They are also known as the Golden Dwarf Cichlid. We've got ourselves a new "fengshui" fish here! Gold = Prosperity!

    Benny,
I was fascinated with this fish when I saw your post. Hope this fellow don't kill the female. Been chasing her around but so far so good.

    Benetay,
Right, they are in a 1ft cube with a tetra and a female endlers, the rest are all killed!

    Jason and Eugene,
The color is golden with metallic blue sheen, but the blue is not so prominent yet.
Sure hope this fellow will bring luck and prosperity!

    Hi Trident

The male I have has a dark blue and green sheen, I though I might have gotten a different Nanna sp. when compared to your pic, but maybe mine has settled down well. The female has two lateral stripes across the body. Will try to take pics if possible.

    Cheers

    Gecko,
Yes I think the blue/green coloration should be darker, what I have is mostly likely tank bred and too much in-breeding.
    Picture of my female.

Looks like the female got coloured up more compared to the male. But regardless of the colour, I am really impressed by the body shape and finnage. They certain look very healthy and tough. Nice pics too very sharp images Richard. =)

Richard, I just noticed your beautiful male fish has a sunken stomach. I sincerely hope he is healthy and eating well. If he stays at the bottom of the tank too often, better start the internal bacteria treatment as soon as possible.

    Jason,
Thanks. This guy is a glutton, maybe I am not feeding him enough. He is active enough, chasing the female, whacking the tetras...........

    dxchen,
Thanks, come to think of it, yes, the female certainly has some nice yellow. Maybe it's her breeding dress?

The breeding dress of the female anomala is not yellow. Infact, its very dark brown to black. The bands on her face and body will be very prominent when she is ready to breed or when she is brood caring. Something like this picture but with much darker bands. Please pardon the wrong genre on the photo. Lazy to change. It should still be Nanacara anomala instead of Ivanacara anomala.
