    Hi,

Just a newbie question, what is the difference between the both of them?

    Is it just model only?

And what is a good gauage of price for a 2nd hand set of either one of the above.

    Cheers
    Nicholas

Mk I have plastic horseshoe while the Mk II uses the metal one like the Nikon flashes.
In the Mk I, there is a physical switch for setting the flash as the master or slave, but for Mk II, I heard there isn't, and to do that is to press the current available buttons.

Mk II supposedly have better E-TTL for its flash power approximation.

I personally will go for Mk I instead of Mk II. But that's my personal take and my style.
I prefer the physical switch for the master-slave. Plus, it is cheaper.

But if you are chasing for the latest model to last you for the don't know how long future, get the Mk II.

    Valice,

What is the physical switch for the master-slave?

Currently what I see in Clubsnap. a 2nd hand MKI is about 500.

Where as a brand new MKII is as stated in the previous link.

I don't intend to chase for the latest but more of buying what is necessary and not later keep changing.

Thus need advise from the senior in this field.

That why I am slowly building up and saving.

    Things I want :

    1. A Camera body should be either a 2nd hand 350d or 400d
    2. A 580 EX MKI or MKII
    3. UV filter to protect the lens
    4. A micro lens. Either a Tamron or a canon. (Most probably tamron as it is cheaper)
    5. A camera bag (someone in AQ offering me a sweet deal)

If budget is a constraint, go for a used Canon Speedlite 550EX. That's below S$500 and you can still get results.

Yupz. That's why Richard got a cheap cheap 550EX, mainly due to his budget constraint.

I just want to say, like most other gear, you don't need the latest and greatest to deliver the image you want. important thing is "sufficient". what you need is a flash, a 550EX is as good as a 580EX under MOST circumstances.

another example would be the 50mm primes. should you get the 50/1.8, or 50/1.4 or 50/1.2L? the answer clearly lies in WHAT kind of images and circumstances you need to shot under.

    i have 2 x 420EX and a 1 x 580EX MKI.
but i have a feeling another 580EX would complete my set.
from my meager fish only shots the flash coverage is just nice.
but i believe that may be lacking for a tank shot for the 420EX.

I thought such circumstances change all the time? Which explains why many owns multiple setups?

I think in most cases it simply means you have not work hard enough to use your equipment and pick the easy way out, thinking the latest and greatest will deliver what you want without effort.

If you are talking about me personally, I used my kit lens with a Nikon D70s for more than a year before picking up my first lens, Sigma 150mm f2.8 macro . I had used my basic set up extensively for fireworks, events and to photograph my daughter, but it prove to be a bit too challenging to take macro with.

I prefer to see it as how hard your "angel" can ward off the "traps" set by the "devil" inside you.

    Anyway, back to topic...
    Nic,
Plan you purchase wisely. Equipment procurement will never be "just right" or "I only need to purchase this last piece to complete my needs", even our "holy" Choy have desires to get better equipments. I agree you should get the MKII IF you can stretch your budget, mainly because of faster cycle time (But do you need it?) the cost difference (Will you want to have more than one flash in the future? If that is the case, would you be able to buy a few MKII or you will still end up with at least one 580MKI or below?) and warranty (repair can be pretty expensive though). However, I still think that you should get a 300D for your first camera instead. By the time, you outgrown it, 600D would probably be out. And 450D would probably cost as much as you would have paid for a 300D today.
The Tamron lense is definitely capable of delivering great macro shots at a good distance.

    Hope this helps
    Cheers and Regards,

Nic, I'm only using 420EX one of the lowest range of flashes. I'm still not intending to upgrade the flash until i can justify the need and see tremendous results on the newer models.

    There's a difference between a need and a want.
    Cheers!

420EX to 430EX is an "upgrade", but I will not call a 420EX and a 550EX as "upgrade" but rather "different". the 550EX enables you to do things a 420EX or even a 430EX cannot. now the question you have to answer is whether those things is something you can plan for or you might run into "unprepared".

so I would consider a 580EX Mk I to Mk II, or even a 550EX to 580EX as an upgrade, but a 17-40/4L to a 16-35/2.8L would be "extending your horizon"
