Has anyone attempted to breed these beautiful anabantoids? Any experiences to share? Thanks!

Well, these grow up to 15cm TL and are predatory fishes. I think most aquarists here keep small fishes, therefore not a good mix, probably the reason why not many keeps them.

Those in the LFS are aquarium bred specimens, aren't they? Anyway, that's my impression, so breeding them should be something doable.

They are bred specimens, the full adult ones are actuallyquite impressive. As Quixotic said, not many hobbyists are keeping the big fish, I remember reading somewhere this fish has got quite a long lifespan also. Maybe that's why seldom see labyrinth breeders(hobbyists) attempts on this species.

Never tried breeding mine when I had them, but to sex them, look at the gill cover. The males tend to have some spines at the edge of the gill cover. Short, so just look closer with a magnifying glass if you have a chance. The females do not have the spines.

I have no idea if they're bubblenesters or scatterers. My old Anabantoid book is lost somewhere.

I realise this is a very old thread (and I am a new member), but I'm looking to get hold of some these and just can't find them anywhere.

    Help anyone!?!?

Last I recall, Polyart occasionally stocks this, along with C328, but supply may be erratic. They're not the most popular of fish to begin with, so good luck hunting.

Righto, found them. Just picked up 2 babies (~4cm) from Y618 (That aquarium) for $3 each. No where else that I looked had them. They've about 20 more there if anyone's interested - I think they're wonderful fish.

I bought a few the other day at Sea View but they all died.

Ah bummer. Were they little ones? Assume you know all their needs re: water chemistry and diet (usually only take live or wet-frozen foods - no dry food!)? I'll keep this thread up to date with how mine go...

Mine ate frozen bloodworms and live tubifex with gusto. I had one for close to 2 years in a mucky tank with a Synodontis as its tankmate. It grew to subadult size there.

    Re: Ctenopoma acutirostre (Leopard Bushfish)

So far so good. One week in quarantine (short I know but had to make room for some new fish) and then into the show tank 2 days ago.

They settled down after about 48 hours in quarantine tank - stopped hiding and have been eating vigorously whenever food is offered. I'm feeding wet-frozen daphnia and bloodworms to them.

Since moving to show tank (4ft x 1.5ft x 1.5ft), seem a little timid again plus are being out-competed for food by the 9 lemon tetras, 5 siamese algae eaters, 5 dwarf neon rainbowfish and 4 banded gouramis they now share a tank with. I successfully target-fed them with bloodworms sucked into a pipette this afternoon and will continue to do so until they settle down in the show tank.

Further updates to follow (if anyone's interested!!),

    Duncan.
