Besides investing into a macro lens, you could try to use an achromatic close-up lens like Canon 250D.

Below you find to a photo made with a Canon EF 50/1.8 I at the closest possible distance and at the bottom another photo with Canon 250D attached to 50/1.8:

Thanks for another great picture, Andrea.

I will be keeping a look out for macro achromatic close-up lens and hopely, can produce some quality close up pictures soon.

    Andreas,
Thanks for the great picture and explanation of your setup.
    I own a 20D with 100mm Macro but I am still a long way
    from getting such good results.

    Hi Richard,
since light is the key to good pictures, what about your flash equipment?
When I spoke about setup above, I didn´t mentioned the use of flashes.
    And that is very important.
Are you able to use a flash off the camera?

    Andreas,
    Yes, I have a Speedlite transmitter, ST-E2. But I only have 1 flash, 550EX.
Saving to get 1 or 2 more.

    Hi Richard,
that´s a very good base. Even with one flash and the ST-E2 you can get very good results. But with two or three flashguns you can get those results under more difficult circumstances as well, and exposure will be more even.

[I guess I could have found your equipment in your signature, sorry, must have been blind]

    Hi Andreas,
Great shots. Just want to ask you a few questions. I am having trouble shooting small shrimps like this. I try shooting CRS in my friend's tank before and they always turn out a bit flat and not very sharp especially on the mouth part. I think those parts are translucent so it kinda blended with the background. I use a single flash on top of the aquarium or sometimes at the side but still can't get it to show.

    Andreas,
People do sometimes miss the signature, but I didn't miss your's.
    Great website!
As for using multiple flash, yes, I believe it would help a lot.
Guess I'll have to save up to get them.
    Thanks

    Hi Luenny,

for proper exposure the flash must not be to far away from the shrimp. Otherwise it loses most of its light compared to the small area where the shrimp is going to be photographed. Even partly translucent shrimps are a tough photography subject. Maybe with one flash only you could try a small photo tank instead.

The flash would be able to give enough light for such a small tank.
As for sharpness, I would have to see an example to tell more.

Below is an example for such a one flash-photo tank shot (NOT with the above 50mm lens-250D combination):

Not the best photo either, but I hope you get the idea.

    @Richard: I´m glad you like it :-)

    Hi Andreas,
Thanks for the tip. Like Richard, I have also visited your web site (a few times already). I still can't get over the pictures. You are sure one of the top aquarium photographer that I have ever known. Lots of light huh? Ok, I will remove my flash diffuser and try again. Thanks for the tip again.
