how much gravel and base fert do i need for a standard 4 foot tank?

simon says 8x5kg bags of jbl base fert and 2 big bags of gravel right?

i was thinking like 5 or 6 bags and 1 pkt root monster loose form?

btw where can i get the loose form root monster? does nature sell it?

and how much light is usually used? about 6x36watts pl right?
but because of my lousy black plastic hood, i'm only able to fit 4x36watts pl tubes and 1 i think its 40 or 36 watt fl tube...

with this lighting config am i still able to grow hair grass and glosso?

    thanks guys!

    Hi Ryan,

What's the height of your tank? Mine is 2ft high and with 6X36 PL, hairgrass is ok, but glosso is struggling and tends to grow up [].

    Ryan,

If your tank is 4' x 1.5' then 5 or 6 bags is enough for average of 2 inche base fert. Root monster can be found at Nature.

Ryan, amount of light depends on your tank size. Is it 4x1.5x1.5 or 4x2x2?

technically, u dun really need root monsters unless u plan to grow rosette plants, for glosso or any other foregrd plants.. yr base fert will be sufficient, jus a note, avoid having a thick gravel, yr foreground plant may have problems reaching the base fert layer

yeah i want to grow a few types of echinodorus and is it the mad. lace plant? yeah but these will be towards the back of the tank...
in the front i will still want hairgrass, glosso, tennelus, alittle riccia maybe.
so i will have to slope my gravel?

lace plants do require cooler temperature,
IMHO.. dun mix too many foregrd plants together,
some combos dun go well with others. and plus u have
to consider the growth rate, if say, u have 1 fast grower
and 1 slow grower, then eventually, the faster plant will
    consume the slower one.

Its always good to create a gradient, not only does it give
depth, larger plants can be planted behind and with the
proper thickness for them to support themselves.

base fert should be gradient as well....best to keep gravel thickness at max 1inch....loose root monters my not be a good idea coz it floats and gets quite messy....unless you are not going to replant your tank

Ryan, for your size tank, if you meant you can put in 4x36W PL and 1x36W FL, then it should be enough light.

yeah i'm doing that... just that the fl tube is 40 watts, should i get a normal daylight tube or the plant one?

    but therez another problem...
the tank gets alittle sunlight in the day... like through some bamboo curtains... how much will this affect the tank?
i notice the tanks at gans also have some sunlight shining at them in the day right?
i think my tank will have about the same amount sunlight as gans outdoor tanks cuz he has the black netting and i have the lousy bamboo curtains for shade...

    oh no!
    then glosso will consume hairgrass!?
so just hairgrass would be better?
and any ideas on how to keep my saggis in check? they sprouting all over my 2 feet tanks!!! even with wood as a perimeter for them... their runners go under the damn wood... if i use arcylic i'm afraid the runners would go over it?
