Hi guys! I was wondering what is the bubble rate for teo's 9ft tank? How does he determine if the CO2 is enough cause seems to be all sorts of method around and I am still a little scare to use my fish as a gauge. (Don't want to adjust until they breathe very hard then reduce the CO2...)

How about you Jacian and juggler? Your tanks are fantastic? How do you guys determine CO2 level in your tank?[]

For my case, I determine the amount of CO2 by testing the kH and pH.

Bubble per second is just a guideline, how fast the plants use the CO2, the fish load, type of diffusor/reactor used, factors contributing to loss of CO2 should all be considered.

For example, my 60l tank is at 3 bubbles per second (bps) while my 400l is at 2bps.

Personally, I also use KH/pH to determine CO2 level. Although it is not 100% accurate, but more than a good enough guide.

Using fish as a guide is too risky for my liking too, it may be too late when you detect something wrong.

Bubbles per second cannot be use as any form of guide when comparing differnt tanks. Temperature, KH, diffusor efficiency, water agitation, amount of plants, lighting conditions... there are simply too many variables.

Initially when setting up the CO2 system, about once every 1 or 2 days.

Now when the system is stable, only when the lazy bug goes on leave.

    Hi guys,

It is just the right time for me to see this topic. I just invested in a CO2 system over the weekend and have been very excited about it.

I have been wondering how the experts like you determine the number of bubbles. I have a Dennerle CO2 Mini-flipper, tanks size 40L, KH ~4 dkH and using 2x18W PL light, quite a lot of plants.

    Dennerle's rule of thumb for bubbles is (recommended to start with);

Tank volume in litres x KH / 50 = number of bubbles per minute (bpm)

Thus, I started with 4bpm. Dennerle recommends to increase over time (days) by monitoring the "long term CO2" indicator. I'm using 6 bpm now (3rd days after setup). My CO2 indicator shows ok using 6 bpm.

Now, I'm still stuck with the unknown .... How many bubbles is suficient for my tank so that my ricia can bubble (just planted). Is 3 bps (or 180 bpm) consider too much for my tank?

Thank you for your kind reply.

Addie for a rough guide, aim for a pH of 6.8 to get approximately 19-20ppm of CO2 as calculated with Chuck's webby. http://www.csd.net/~cgadd/aqua/art_plant_co2chart.htm
    For optimal CO2...aim for 15-20ppm....
Note that pH/KH is a rough guide as both require test-kits which may not be that accurate. (At the end of the day, you should see some pearling from plants [] if the conditions are right.)
