Zenislev, it is not imported here because no demand and they do not acclimatize well.
    They are fragile also

Thanks Henry, Lack of demand. Exactly, a few years ago, a few lfs and a farm imported the fish. Everybody went to look at them, there were more viewers than buyers, eventually the fish were left swimming in the sellers' tanks for some time. The sellers finally decided to plunge prices to clear stock, "vowed" not to bring these fish again.

Hobbyists are more attracted to the coral red pencil, being more "red". Some of the feedback was that this fish has no colour..

As a seller, it is always a delicate balance, a choice between the specialist hobbyist vis-a-viz the mass market, on such rare fish.

    Regards

I can understand if they think the price is too expensive, but to say that the fish has no colour, and therefore not keen to keep them is just sad.

See how much premium the Japanese (and hobbyist from other countries) are willing to pay for them! *sigh*

Friends.. there are buyers of this fish in our local market.
In the first place, the rare supply of this fish does make it impossible to bring in large quantities to cater for a mass market.
Also, like it or not, this fish is not going to be appreciated by the general hobbyists.

Word of caution though, they are jumpers and prone to jump when they get nervous.
Prefably cover your tanks if you want to keep them for a long time.
Also please get a school (minimum 10) as they tend to adapt better this way.

IMHO, they look even better than coral reds as they do school in a planted tank.

Pencils are hardly communal with their own kind.

Ok in that case, I'll share my experience.
This fish can and should be kept in a school.
They also can swim in schools which makes a very nice sight in a planted tank.
I had 16 to 20 of these fishes more than 2 years back.

Actually, Andrew, only the males of coral red (Nannostomus mortenthaleri) is aggressive and can kill each other... if space is restricted. This can be generally avoided by providing a very (very) large tank.
