Hi guys, I noticed my b. japonica keeps on shedding leaves eversince I replanted them last Monday. Anyone knows whats the reason?

why is yr kH so low? i'm not sure if it matters but kH should be higher for the plants to do better.
    Cheers!

I think ph 5.4 is way too low. Too acidic!

    reduce CO2

Try up your kH, your co2 should be fine.

I think KH is only to buffer the pH, does not directly affect the plants. Increase KH to increase your pH. See the Aquatic FAQ... there's an post there about KH and Baking Soda.

Any new growth on your Blyxa? If there is then, it could just be shedding leaves in response to change in conditions. Which leaves are shedding, random, top leaves, bottom leaves?

    Any PO4 levels?

    Chris,

Did your Blyxa survive? Or it's happening right now?

Seems like they are kinda fussy towards condition change..... my first batch failed and the second.... well, you can see in the pics.....

    wks,

has this tank been running for a long time? your parameters very akin to old tank syndrome... it would be interesting to check your NH3 levels to see if they are high.

sorry, a little different thing about this plant to ask. I bought 2pots 2months ago and now, they are growing like crazy, forcing their ways into areas of other plants.

How do i prune it? cut the leave blades (getting long as well) and/or seperate out small batches that are extended from the parent plant?

You already have the plant in your tank before and they do not do well after replanting? What other parameters have you changed?
I find Blyxa quite temperamental. I tried 3 batches before it did well in my tank. Then it starts deteriorating again. It could be sensitive to changes in water/substrate quality.
Firstly, try up the kH to about 2 to 4 degrees slowly. The pH will rise accordingly.
    Good luck.

    Lorba,

Prune by plucking the side shoot from the main stem. When the bottom becomes to straggly, uproot the main plant, save and replant the side shoots.

When they get dense, they can become dirt traps. If your shrimps do not clean it up for you, run your fingers thru them during water change and siphon out the stuff that floats out.

Better to plant them at least 3 to 4 inches apart to give them space to grow.

Thanks for your advice guys. I actually put in baking soda during my last water change. Its definitely the 24 hour CO2 supply(solenoid spoiled) that overcome the buffering effect. I will check the kH value more often and hope that the B. japonica will go back to normal.

Allen, I doubt its old tank syndrome. My tank is only 17 month old. In fact I believe my base fert was nearly depleted due to rapid growth of vallisneria and Sagittaria subulata.(I threw both plants away now) Now I have to depend on root monster and Jobe to sustain my remaining plants.

it might still be good to check your NH3... at such low ph levels, the efficiency of some of the bacteria might be inhibited.

Just curious, why don't u increase your kh? Its easy to do, with no or v.low risks involved?

Strange, I found Blyxa starting growing well in my tanks after the tanks have aged. I doubt kH matters much, since they are native to SEA where very soft waters abound. Neither is very bright light really necessary. My guess for its preference is really a nutrient-rich, stable environment.

I'm not too sure what is the factor for Blyxa.

I have them in 2 tanks. Both at 30 celcius.

First tank has bright lights, rich substrate, regular liquid fert, CO2. Results: large Blyxa with a bit of reddish on the leaves.

Second tank has base fert only, moderate light, no liquid fert, no CO2. Results: short (2 inch tall) lush green Blyxa.
