    Erm...

For us, we use a ST-E2 to trigger the flash.

The flashes we used are all cannon.

The ST-E2 might not be able to work for Sigma 500DG.

Think you got to wait for replies from the rest.

I am also pretty newbie in photography too.

    Cheers

I have used ST-E2 with Sigma 500 alone, but somehow it didn't work well when doing ratio with canon's flashes. i.e sigma don't fire or no eTTL. Maybe I didn't set it up correctly. Anyway, that sigma burn out before I could play with it more.

Alternatively, you can use the off-camera cord.

    doubleace,
First you have to ensure that this is compatible to your camera. Best way to use the Sigma 500DG is to mount it on your camera's hotshoe because it does not work with Canon ST-E2. The 500 DG can work with Canon ETTL. That is to say it's fully automatic.
I was thinking of getting this flash till they told me it couldn't work with the ST-E2.
You can find out more at this thread.

ok thanks broz.. I will go and find out.. Cause this was bought together with the canon camera so not sure it's a stand alone or have to mount on top the the camera.

all flash are meant to be mounted on hot shoe, or via cable. only very specific models support being slaved to the ST-E2. third parties like Sigma do not have access to the ST-E2 command protocol so they have to reverse engineer, and hence may not always work right.
