    ... was taken in 1826 by Joesph-Nicephore Niepce in France. Using a chamber with a pewter plate coated with bitumen of Judea, the exposure time was 8 hours and the result can be seen here:

    We talk about sensor size nowadays but back in the 1840s, some folks used a technique called the Collodion Wet Plate, in effect a portable dark room with a glass plate coated with a photosensitive emulsion. This gave a then-state-of-the-art exposure time of 10-90 seconds. Standard plate sizes were 8x10 inches, but one guy, John Kibble of Glasgow, used a 36x44 inch plate with a lens 13 inches in diameter which had to be drawn by a horsecart. There is even a record of a 4x5 foot plate with the camera mounted on a railroad car!
