    Hi Lyon,

Base fert is not absolutely necessary, but good to have....

Better not to use a powerhead, too much water current, plants can't absorb the nuritents.

no idea about the riccia...never grown it []

Why not? Powerheads connected to spray bars can be used for circulation. But just to make sure it is not too powerful. Some pple inject their CO2 into the powerhead to break it down to smaller bubbles.

For Riccia, I suppose trimming can help maintain an even look. Even when we tie it on a flat slate, it will never grow upwards evenly. But that's the beauty right? Or else it looks artificial.

Most powerheads are very powerful... just make sure you don't create to strong a current. Why doyou intend to put in a powerhead?

Without base fert, possible... but you'll need to supplement the substrate with root fertilisers.

It's not the size that matters (I can't help but smirk as I type this )... it's the flow rate that's important.

Root fertilisers will be stuff like Flourish Tabs, JBL 7-Balls, Jaqno pellets and Root Monster (plug form). Stick them near the roots of the plants. Read the instructions to find out how to use them and when to replenish.

I once use the filter for my 1.5 ft marine and so i'm thinking of using it again.
