Got inspired by a friend that shoots very nice bird pictures with his EF 100-400mm. Gave it a try and could only managed 1 poorly taken shot. Not many birds around. Think i went to late, around 11am. In the end, used it to shoot the butterflies that were fluttering around instead.

This bird was damn high up in the tress...

    A plus 3 for me.

I was shooting at ISO400. After cropping the picture, it looks even grainier. Read that 350D sucks at ISO400.

This EF 100-400mm seems like a rather versatile lens. Can capture birds very high up as well as mid size insects. Although its alittle more tricky when handling insects with it.

There was also a pair of common mime that was flying about gracefully. So graceful they refuse to stop flying.

hahaha... They are like that.. When they stop, you wanted to shoot then they flew away again.

    Eugene,
That's the problem with some of the butts at TPTP, I always have a hard time chasing them around.
    You hand held the 100-400?

    Yes, damn siong.

Don't think its pertaining to the butts at toa payoh park. Think it depends on the species of the butterflies. Like the Painted jezebel is one that seldom land. What i learned is that shooting them in puddling areas where they get "drunk" is much easier then shooting them in forested areas. They do not hold long for you to shoot and get spook easily. So you got to figure out their habits, the area where they often hang around, and maybe also with a little bit of luck on the day of your shooting.

Also lens played a big part, i could only shoot the 2nd butt picture with the lens fully extended at 400mm. Even a 180mm macro could not reach this butt. And since i was so far away, the butt didn't even realize i was there. But the bad thing is, shooting small things at that distant, any small movement will result in an off focus picture.

    Here's another shot.

You shot these with 100-400mm lens? I thought that lens only give you 20% of original size?

Yes, all the shots are taken with the 100-400mm. I did some cropping of the pictures to removed the unwanted space. I'm not sure about the 20% thing. Maybe experts can shed some light on it.

I still like to take fish pictures! Particularly apistos! Trying to shoot plecos now too. But damn difficult to catch them with their fins extended plus they are always hiding under something which makes it even more difficult! The lighting positions are an headache.

I just love nature photography!!! Will be trying to shoot some birds at the park over the weekend again. Hopefully can get some. I love that sleeping owl shot by mervin, using the same lens as well!

Here's a comparison of the 100mm macro and the 100-400mm mounted with the Canon 500D close up lens.

Pictures not edited. Just cropped. Taken at 1/200, f7.1 ISO200. Can see the difference?

are these both 100% crop? if not it is hard to compare sharpness. however you can see that the 100mm has much more DOF.

I retook the 100mm macro picture and replaced the previous one. Sorry choy, i only cropped out the part covering the whole plant from the picture.

Should i compare the uncropped picture then to be accurate?
