    Hi,

I'm currently using the small gravel that Rainbow is selling. Just wondering what kind of gravel does everybody use in their planted tank?

I noticed a lot of people are using lonestar. not sure what that is. and i just saw the dennerle "crystal quartz gravel" today. wow, really drooled over it. but at $45 per 10kg, that's pretty stiff! the shop i saw used 8 packs of that 10kg gravel for its 4 ft tank. that's $360! has anybody used such expensive gravel before???

    Cheers

Dennerle's gravel is kinda pricy but it does look good. Me however can't afford their gravel and that why I opted to use Lonestar...

I believe it's not called lonestar anymore... errrr.... the name is 'Lapis lutre' I think..... It comes in a brown paper bag. The weight indicated should be 22.7kg.
    Cheers!!

    CBY,
What's you tank dimension? I used 2 bags for my 4X2X2 tank.

NA Nature, Teo plant farm, Gan, Capricorn (aka Ah Pek) and Bioplast (System & Control) do carry them. Maybe you can give them a call before going down to see if they got stock. Refer to the LFS list at the top of the page.
    Cheers!!

cby...between basefert and gravel, invest more into base fert and less to gravel....try not to execeed 1in front and 2in back of gravel....coz if too thick, the plants may have difficult reaching the fert especially foreground plants

if you're going to use denerle quarzt (inert) you may as well use seachem flourite or ada power soil or nisso volcanic soil..

the ones I see around, is called monterey sand or something like that.. I don't know why people call it lonestar.. its the same packaging they used to fill the tank at teos.

the reason why they were called lonestar is that the labelling for the gravel packs changed to monterey bay blah only a few months ago or so (i forget)
before that, it read lonestar gravel

    i'm using black gravel
kinda oem, from fish farm road, no brand no nothing
good thing is you can't see crap on it

I'm using aquacolisa black gravel. No substrate fertilisers. Only jobe sticks, laterite balls, monster roots

if you plan for a lawn them don't really matter what gravel as long as they're about 2-3mm in size.
why I don't do garden hybrids and aquarium strains: natural species is a history of Nature, while hybrids are just the whims of Man.

So far, Lonestar seems the cleanest, can use without washing. Aquacolisa is clean (i.e. no debris) but alot of gravel sediment... during washing, the water turns cream colour. Even after that, it forms a film on the surface when you fill the tank, and the water is slightly cloudy.
Vincent - AQ is for everyone, but not for 'u' and 'mi'.
Why use punctuation? See what a difference it makes:
A woman, without her man, is nothing.

agree with you vincent....acutally if river sand color is the preference, lonestar is still the most affordable brand that needs not have to rinse anymore.....

    Gravel tip to cut cost:
Use Lonestar or other cheaper brands for the lower section of gravel.
Then use some Dennerle gravel to cover the top portion. Your tank will look beautiful.

    ehhm, cool
where is this aqua colisa thing to be found?
1~2mm/fine river sand sounds just right for a pygmy cory species tank
