Don't quite get what you mean by your initial question, nor your solution.
Do you mean you have java fern that floats to the surface? Or ferns with leaves that grow out of the water surface?

leaves growing out of water surface...
cut the tall leaves away?
When you cut up the dried up portion, do you cut away the whole leaf or just the part? Best to cut away the whole leaf by nipping it at the base. If you trim it halfway it tends to suffer and die off.

Knowing what plants to get and how to use them is an art.
Aquascaping is a marriage of art and science, the logical and emotional.

oh no i cut 1/2 away
will monitor, will cut it off if it start to die
thanks
I too have the problem with the end of the leaf being darker, or sometimes lighter. Once the leaves on mine get to about 3-4 inches they get holes in and thus die. Or stay small covered in black/brown patches. Perculiar. I don't understand it with mine.
As for tall leaves, you will just have to cut off the ones that grow out the water. Other than that you could place whatever they're attatched to a bit lower giving more space for them to grow? It's a possibility.

The canvas is what you make it...
It's the growing part of the leaf of ferns. Like new shoots on stem plants.
