OK I went down to system & control for the first time (ok quite suaku I know), and spent quite some time looking through their range of stuff... Some of which was pretty impressive. For example, their FL tubes boast a CRI of 95... which is pretty impressive for a specialist tube!

Anyway, I'm more curious about the range of ferts available from bioplast? Given that bioplast is quite a reputable company, how is it that no one has mentioned their ferts? Or do their ferts suck? Or is this like someone's best kept secret? Would be curious to hear feedback from anyone who has tried their ferts.

    hi Allen

problem is that bioplast as a company does do much PR in the aquatic market and coupled with the fact that ah tan does do much PR himself out of the range of his retail space. One thing for sure is that with the absences of product knowledge booklet like Dennerle or the simplicity of tropica having their all-in-one liquid fert, it doesnt help very much as bioplast's range of fert is quite comprehensive which i believe is more complex than dennerle's current fert system.

To add on to the problem, ah tan places his stuff behind the counter and customers will pickup the item to read the USP of the product. I believe that Yimin uses quite a few of bioplast......

i am using the BIoplast Terramineral base fert. They don't give the composition, but I suspect it's quite close to Dupla laterite-based fert. I put in 7 packs for my 3 ft tank, so far so good.

the recommended application (as per the box instructions) is 1kg per 100l of tank water
i find that's not very realistic
for my 2ft tank i used 12 boxes to create a 1in layer
you could mix it with gravel to thin it out
just don't layer the bottom and then cover it with 3in of gravel, like some idiot i know very very well did

True... their PR and marketing skills are a bit lacking... I bought some of bioplast depomineral balls to try (not used yet), but I thought their range of ferts looked pretty complete... although the composition of the trace mineral solution looked a bit lacking. It could be an alternative to using dennerle though.

On a side note, when I was there the 2 guys (dunno which is ah tan) were so busy trying to explain to someone about why his tank was growing algae that I pretty much had to go behind the counter and help myself...

I bought the same, the base fert balls, last month. Just started to use it. I realise BioPlast liquid ferts interestingly include 3 types:
    1) the usual trace elements
    2) the iron
    3) the N & K

If I remember correctly, they come in 250ml and even 5 litres. I would try them after my Seachem exhausted, just for a change to see the diff.

Yes, the 2 brothers are absolutely friendly and frank. Ask them any thing, they are most willing to share. They have many nice tanks too, 3 big ones (5, 6 & 7ft) and 3 small ones. The aquascape is not fantastic but their plants are healthy which make them beautiful. One of the routine I knew is that they change the water twice a week. Oh yes, they just brought in some autumn angels, small ones, and more plants.

The setback about the stall is that they do not have enough wide range of products. Their main focus is clearly the BioPlast when you walk in the shop but strangely, they never promote them personally at all (actually, that is why I like to go to that shop, no pestering at all). However, their business is not as brisk as they should be, if I am not wrong.

If you ask me whether I am trying to promote them, I think I am, simply because there are not much real planted tank shops around. Especially this shop, you can see more than 80% of their things are only for plants. Their planted tanks dominate the whole place and the plant products are everywhere including lighting systems. They are so dedicated to this hobby that they ignore the rest of the more sellable things like filters & accessories, fish foods, etc. I gave them my opinions few weeks ago, but there are no change so far. Perhaps, they haven't got the budget.

    Have fun.

As the name of the shop reflects, the core business is not aquarium. This wold probably explain why Ah Tan did not go to futher extend to widen his range of products.

    that's not entirely true
the mainstay is now the aquarium trade, and the rest of the business isn't as active as it was

as for why he's not going all out to sell
this is one of the mysteries that will probably never be solved
most likely he himself doesn't know [:] []

anyone knows the history of Bioplast/System Engineering and the two Ah Tans?

For me, this is how a LFS should be: relaxed, friendly, non-intrusive yet cheerfully helpful. Granted their fish range could be better (their plant selection has improved greatly of late), it's still a good place to visit. Now that my office is just opposite, I pop by almost everyday before going home.

Here is the discription of TerraMineral from their website.

    TerraMineral

On setting up the aquarium, you should mix the Terra Mineral nutrient substrate with the gravel bed. It promotes a rich nutrition depot to all water plants and strengthens the roots considerably.

Apparently, you have to mix it with the gravel.
