There's been some recent discussion on base fert (courtesy of Ryan) and gravel (Cheeboonyong). You should be able to get some info there.
Hi Anyone,
For planted tank, can anyone point out, are the any specific brand of subtract which I should get? I am not sure if they are any differences. Some LFS actually repacked them and sell, so I wouldn't know if the brand need to consider. I am going to get the size of 1-2mm substract but anyone can recommend which to get?
What about the fertiliser mixed? Which is good/recommended for plant tank? Any recommendation? Dennerle?
Thanks.

Thanks for that budak,
I have read the past disccusions you have mentioned.
I like the message posted by Shao Siong (If spell correctly) on tips to cut cost....buy the cheaper gravel for bottom layers, and put Dennerle gravel on top layer.
Other messages I've got are to invest on the fert rather than gravel.
this works if you do not rescape you tank. after a few rescapes, you are back to cheaper gravel look rather than dennerle gravel look.----------------

if you have an iron rich base fert, you can reduce the amount of fe added into the water column. this will give plants an edge over algae. also plants like lotus, crypto and echino grows better if nutrients are available to their roots.

tetra : that kind of defeats the purpose of using dennerle gravel
when you disturb the gravel the bottom layer is bound to come up and it's very unsightly especially if the two layers contrast in colour
you don't have to use dennerle
i find the common type of gravel looks good enough
the dennerle gravel is just eyecandy
Hi Tawauboy & DEA,
Thanks for pointing out the problem. Yeah, you are right, after a while, when the gravel get mixed up, I probably can't see any Dennerle gravel liao!
Tawauboy, By the way, which type of fert is rich of fe? If you know? Which common gravel would you recommend? lonestar?
to make the base fert rich in fe, you can use jbl and supplement with jbl ferrotabs or laterite ball.
use lonestar gravel becasue no need to wash. i used aqua colisa and had to wash.

tetra, go join the gravel survey post that's still going on. think lonestar's winning.
P-L-E-C-O-R-Y=M-A-N-I-A!!! YEAH!
FLORENCE, capital of the region of Tuscany, has a population of around half a million inhabitants, spreads on the banks of the Arno, between the Adriatic and the Tyrrhenian seas, almost in the middle of the Italian peninsula. It is a city which bustles with industry and craft, commerce and culture, art and science.
I used 12 Dennerle 10 kg bag for my tank and Duponit and Duponit mix as base fert. It's quite convenient as I just dump them in straight from the bag. No need to wash and it's also lime free.
I have dwarf cichlids in my tanks! Do you?
Hi Tawauboy,
to make the base fert rich in fe, you can use jbl and supplement with jbl ferrotabs or laterite ball.
You mean you mixed jbl ferrotabs into the base fert, when you lay them?
