I started this thread is to let everyone know that if you want to keep an aquarium, chances are you are also going to keep Algae too. Algae itself is not a scary things to have but rather how you can control it to minimum and from spreading. Is part of the ecosystem. There's nobody in the world keep planted tank without the company of Algae including the master Amano himself. I would like to share with you guys this website of Amano student attending his training days dealing with Algae's.

Hair algae is ok, so long it dont spread too much and under control, it also can be part of your fish food when they cant find food to eat! I do have some hair algae and is under control, nothing serious, is just part of the ecosystem. So far i dont have serious algae issues, though i had BBA before and it dont spread as long as you know what went wrong and remedies fast.

Common algae that everyone has encountered is either hair algae or spot algae.

I got a massive outbreak of this... green hairy algae that looks like... hair. It is in a school tank however and thus easily explained away as an example of the eco system. XD

Amazingly, some 1/2 dying hornworts i added into my small tank cleared up my greenwater in 3 days.

Although the small tank already have some anacharis.

Good point to highlight, especially to beginners .

For "algae free" tank, go low tech .
    Cheers,

Personally I find algae to be common sight in almost all tanks... all my tanks, be it high, medium or low tech will surely contains some form of algae. As long as they are under control... I shouldn't complain much.

I find the use of cleaning crew to be the most effective.

I agree, I have a one ft low tech tank, no co2, no nutrient, and only 9w of lights, the nana inside is much cleaner and greener then the one I have in my 3 ft tank that have almost 200w of lights, loads of nutrients and Co2
