    Hi there,

I was just wondering do our lfs sell Crossband chocolate gourami?

I've only seen Samurai and Chocolate gourami before.

    Cheers,

You meant Sphaerichthys selatanensis? They have been here before. Sometimes hobbyists mistook them for Sphaerichthys osphromenoides, the normal chocolate gourami, because it didn't cross their mind that it is a different species, and/or the cross bands are not very distinct, not helped by pale looking fish in the LFS.

Sphaerichthys selatanensis fins have a reddish hue compared to Sphaerichthys osphromenoides. Try to look more carefully at them when you see a tankful of them. Sometime mixed

    Oh?!
I have both fish all along?? Sorry, hijack the thread for illustration (and ID) purposes because the pics from online sources are rather confusing.

Sphaerichthys osphromenoides? I think this is a female.

    Sphaerichthys selatanensis? Male?

    Or both Sphaerichthys osphromenoides??

    Both Sphaerichthys osphromenoides.

Sphaerichthys selatanensis will have an additional bar running from the base tip of the dorsal across the body ending behind the ventrals. In both your photos, they only spot a spot/dot. And they have some reddish fins like joopsg pointed out.

Sphaerichthys selatanensis. Notice the additional bar?

Oh, I thought the "crossband" was referring to the horizontal band across the body...
