Should not be the case. IME, it's usually cos the bottom part of the stems were damaged during planting. How did you plant them, by tweezers or fingers?

Vincent - AQ is for everyone, but not for 'u' and 'mi'.
Why use punctuation? See what a difference it makes:A woman, without her man, is nothing.
A woman: without her, man is nothing.
i planted them using tweezers. but it's my gf's eyebrow tweezers, not the kind that they sell expensively in LFS
its either like what vinz mentioned abt damaging the stem while planting or the bottom isnt getting enuff lighting (only happens in some stemmed plants, not all)
Ummmm... eyebrow tweezers may not be suitable... the way they are constructed, they could have damaged the stem.
At the very least get those small pointed ones ppl use to construct model kits, pick up stamps etc. If you get the ones sold at LFS, don't buy anything that cost more then $20++. Not much difference between those and the ones that cost >$30.

I would agree with Simon, most likely this happens due to insufficient light.
I've experienced this happening on my cabomba caroliana in the past... the top was fine, but the bottom melted off. Maybe you could also tell us which plant you have so that we can provide more comments if we have planted the plant before?
As for tweezers, I have not used them before last week... even though my fingers are quite pudgy. In fact you can plant 90% of your plants quite happily using just your fingers... For me, I recently bought a pair from teos though as planting APP with my fingers proved to be more difficult (almost impossible).
