How much is your some plants? If there's too much disturbance, then remove your fauna. If not, they're alright. Just expect the tank to be cloudy for a while as the dust settle back.

Sad to hear the sudden death of your fauna. If is a newly setup tank, yes you need to remove the fauna when you remove big parts of the plant. You may have encountered ammonia strike causing the death of your fauna.

The set-up is about 6 months old, is this considered a new set-up. Anyway, I will remove the fishes when I change/remove the plants. Thanks

I usually use a hose with small diameter and suck the tank water out slowly. You can use your normal hose, but you have to control the flow so it's not too powerful that it sucks up your gravels. You might need help from another person to suck up water.

Place the hose inlet near the plant as you remove the plant slowly. The dirty water will be suck out. Make sure your water filter is off first.

    My 2cents thought
Maybe you can do it in a few installment, if you have too many fauna or too lazy to catch them

If you do not have another ideal tank environment to house your faunas, might want to do it in phases as per suggested by geezer.
