There r a few things to take note!!

Firstly take note of the clarity of the water. Of coz, clear water can be deadly too but it is definitely a first gd impression if u r going to choose fr a tank with clean water than a tank with dead fishes and cloudy water.

Secondly check for any injuries.. this is quite obvious rite? If the fish really very nice but is suffered just a torn fins, u still can consider it as the fin can be healed back.

Thirdly, observe the behaviour of the fishes whether they r active or not. Malawis r just a bunch of active fishes and when u place your hand near, they will surely come for u. Beware of those staying under the water surface for quite sometime and breathing heavily, they caould be suffering fr internal injuries.

Lastly, get some advices fr the experts on how the fishes in that particular shop fares. They can also ensure that u get a gd deal too without been conned to pay a high price!

But still, there are something that cannot be avoided. What i suggest is only 80% foolproof and the rest is depend on luck! Gd luck!!
