    Hi, everyone,

It took me a long time and a lot of hard work to do this but I'm happy to announce that my killifish website is up and running. Please check it out and let me know if you like it. Feel free to criticise but please be merciful.

In the words of the good folks on the AKA (American Killifish Association) Beginners' Committee -

"We were all beginners once; we are all beginners still".

Maverick, you should get plant spawners like Aphyosemion. They will spawn readily in a heavliy planted tank

Thanks for pointing that out. I already have it corrected.

There are many killies that can be kept in planted tanks and their eggs don't have to go through a dry incubation period. The Fundulopanchax gardnerei N'sukka for one and the Aphyosemion australes for another.

The fact that their eggs do not need to be collected makes it difficult for me to sell them. They can be collected too, mind you, except that it's a lot of work. I haven't got round to breeding the australes yet but I have successfully bred the N'sukkas. I simply let them breed and multiply in my planted tanks. However, someone came to my house yesterday and bought almost all my female N'sukkas. So I have only a few left and I need them for future stock. Sorry.

Will let this forum know when I have australe fry for sale.

    Mr Loh,

You have really done a good job. The website is very informative and good for beginners like me. The pictures are really helpful as I do not have to visualise them. It's a good digest! Good work!

Thanks to everybody for the nice compliments about my website.

Skydevil - Congratulations!! If your australes are spawning, that's great news. Take good care of the eggs or they will get attacked by fungus. I'm sorry there's nothing much I can do about your Fundulopanchax gardneri which you said are all dead. Fish die sometimes, you know []

Like I said before, I probably killed more fish than anyone here.

Maverick, you can try writing to the BKA, the British Killifish association for help. As for precautions, just make sure the eggs are kept somewhere where it's neither too hot nor too cold. Tell your friend not to check in the eggs with the luggage. Better to hand carry.

As for availability of eggs, I have a real problem. I have many eggs but the trouble is I can't be sure they will hatch. And as long as I can't be sure, I dare not sell them. I think the best thing would be for me to hatch them myself and sell the fry. That way I can still keep the prices low. If I raise the fish to adults, they will cost more.

I know this will take the fun out of the whole thing. "Add water, make fish" - that's the amazing part about the whole hobby. But I got no other choice. The last time I sold eggs to the hobbyists here, many of the eggs fail to hatch.

    I warned you, didn't I?

Once they are fungused, that means there is no more hope. Remove fungused eggs immediately or it will spread like wildfire. If some of your eggs are still good, try doing this.

Buy a bottle of acriflavine from the Chinese medicine shops. Acriflavine is the same as "yellow medicine", what your mother will apply to your bruises when you fall down. Fill up a bottle, about one litre, with clean water and using an eyedropper, put in a few drops of acriflavine. I think about 3 drops will do. The water should turn a light yellow in colour. Take the water from this solution and drop a few drops into the container holding your eggs. I'm not sure if this will work but that's what I did the last time when I receive non-annual eggs from overseas. Too strong a solution will kill the eggs. Too weak a solution will not help prevent fungus. It's a touch and go thing really. I will have to experiment myself many times before I can tell you the exact formula.

KC, currently I only have Nothobranchius korthausae (yellow) and Nothobranchius guentheri breeding adults for sale. I know everyone wants the Notho rachovii but I'm afraid I don't have enough of them. I have many eggs of the rachovii but I can't sell them as I'm not sure if they will hatch. I will eventually put the rachovii up for sale but I have to hatch them first. Hope you will understand.

I'm selling the Notho korthausae for $17 a trio and the guentheri for $23 a trio. A trio is one male to 2 females.

I used to sell all my fish at the same price but it turned out to be a big mistake as no one wanted the other fish. Everyone only wanted the rachovii which gave me a big problem as I don't know what to do with the other species I have. Although they are not as beautiful as the rachovii, it would be such a pity to give them all away as they can't be found in any fish shop in Singapore. Almost all my killies were raised from eggs that came from another country. It's very difficult to get eggs from foreign lands to hatch so I hate losing any of the species I have in my tanks now.

I would encourage would-be killifish hobbyists to try raising and breeding the cheaper species first as chances of them dying in your tanks are quite high. Nothos are tough but they succumb easily to velvet disease.

I gave up on my Nematolebias whitei and Simp constainciae when nobody showed interest in them. It's such a pity really. I bet you can go round the fish shops here in Singapore and in Malaysia and you will not find a single whitei or constainciae. But what to do, I have to go along with what the market demands.

The best killifish website in term of information, pictures and user friendliness. Very neat too.

Well done! Just like me, many will benefit from it.

    Have fun.
