    I recommend you guppies.
why I don't do garden hybrids and aquarium strains: natural species is a history of Nature, while hybrids are just the whims of Man.

    thanks for the input

are there fish with rainbow colours? eg red line torpedo barb?
my tank is too small for them

can i keep apistogramma? was thinking of other barb too, maybe tiger barb

    keeping tiger barb
the problem now is pH...any good ways to lower the pH other than using soil?
can i put peats/ketapang leaves in hang on filter? any better suggestion?

    thanks

Apologies to hijack your thread ... had been wanting to keep a few of these beautiful red line torpedo barbs but not sure about their requirements.

    Anyone can share the experience?

    TTS,

Is there any reasons or restrictions on why you cannot start your own thread in the forum on the red-line torpedo barbs?

Is it fair for you to divert the flow of discussion into your own specific queries, not relating to the thread starter's queries?

I suspect the answers are no, but I will give the benefit of the doubt. I know everyone is all excited about nice beautiful fishes, but it just isn't courteous to hijack a thread, please spare some thoughts for the thread starter, just as how you would like them to be considerate to your thread discussions.

Please kindly do not repeat this in the forums, not just in AQ, but in other Internet forums as well. I have split your queries to this thread here, http://www.aquaticquotient.com/forum...ad.php?t=43563

Tiger barb can be kept in alkaline pH, supposedly up to 8.0. However, IMHO, keeping them in a small tank is going to increase their aggression because of the limited space and close proximity. A 2 feet tank and above will work better for them.

A pair of Apistogramma sp. can be kept in a 1 foot tank, but do read on the specific requirements.

Red line torpedo can grow up to 15cm, and since you going to keep them with guppies, better take tiger barb out of your list. Since you mention rainbow, why don't give Melanotaenia praecox (Neon Rainbowfish) a try?

did some research on water parameter requirement and it states they prefer slightly acidic condition

it will be wonderful if they can do will with aged water treated with anti chlorine

now another problem arise which is lack of space

maybe i should consider sign suggestion of keeping rainbow fish

    thanks

6 fish with a 1.5" length will look very tight in a 1 ft tank. Neon rainbows get bigger than 2". Go for Forktail rainbows instead. Clown Killies are nice too but do get a tank cover. My choice would be Ember tetras or Galaxy Rasboras.

Yep agree, sorry for the bad suggestion, they will be too big for a 1ft. I have 4 neon rainbows with me for half a year, they grow from 1.5" to 2" now, very active fish, get a bigger tank to keep them if you want

Clown Killies and galaxy rasbora not very active imho.

Cherry barb? Quite an easy fish to keep and breed too.

Aquarium strain of Tiger barb, they come in many patterns and colours. Not the best choice for 1 foot tank, cherry barb would be better.

How about White cloud mountain minnows, they are pretty active, may not be as colourful but easy to keep.

saw a few in polyart but not as red
    price wise 50% cheaper

decide to keep red tiger barb...maybe 2 instead of 6
is it feasible in my 1 by .5 feet tank with hang-on filter
will use gex soil to lower pH
a few stalk of java fern to cover the piping

    thanks

I am keeping different types of tiger barb and realize the size of the red color barb are usually smaller and the survival rate are much lower than other tiger barb like the yellow with black strip, albino, platinum and green. My guess because they are artificial hybridizing, not natural breed.
