from my experience, all my sword plants show no sign of effect from salt... usually lasted for a few months.. but I dun think other species can withstand the salt better than sword plants/echinodorus
I'm intending to maintain in my 6 foot planted tank, a salt treatment at levels used to treat ich. Reason being that my arowana is nursing an open wound from jumping.
What, if any, is the long term effects of this level of salt treatment on planted tanks?

why on earth are you using salt for open wounds?
To keep bacteria in the water suppressed. Bad idea?
COnsidering setting up my UVS once I get it repaired... (darn PetMart hasn't called me about the part yet.)

Would salt cause fish pain when in contact with the salt(water)? I'm sorry ah, but I'm not sure if scientifically fish feel any pain... but philosophically, you'll never be sure it won't. []

Hi Vinz,
May be you should get the UV earlier as it helps to steralise the water, thus, keeping the bacterias to minimum. You may also consider using antibiotic.
I hope this help.
Have fun.
Eprouve,
Errr... I'm no scientist, but I'm pretty sure fish feel pain... how they respond to it is another matter.
Vinz,
As for salt, I use 1tbsp/10G with no issues in my tank (been using this for years). But dunno what levels you are thinking of using?

Salt is actually good for arowanas, how it affects plants I'm not too sure.
Previously, I used 500g of salt for my 4 x 2 x 1.5 bare tank with arowana.
I don't know about salt for arowanas... they come from inland rivers. It's a common practise among arowana keepers apparently, but I doubt it's something they come across in nature.
As for the level for salt we use for ich, I don't think its strong enough to be painful to fishes. On the other hand, I'm not a fish.
Still pondering about it.

why freshwater fishkeepers see the need to add salt to their freshwater tanks (on a regular basis) i can never fathom
good for them? other than fish that naturally come from slightly brackish waters, i don't really see a benefit
any arowana keeper knows why?
vinz
salt is more commonly used for fungus and external parasites
i don't advocate using it to suppress bacteria
nor do i recommend uv
trust your plants and your water conditions
better yet, change more water
DEA,
That's my gut feel... to trust my plants and water conditions. That's why I'm still hem-hawing about using UV and salt. Also not putting him in hospital tank as the high oxygen in the planted tank should be better for his healing.
Anyway, the severed rays dropped off today and the fish seems fine, so I'll just observe for now.
