What is the general behaviour of this species? I have introduced one male and female into my tank some time ago but they are so shy I haven't seen them in weeks. Is shyness this normal behaviour or is he dead? Can I introduce more than one male into a planted 3ft tank?

you can have a small school of 4-6. they are not territorial like Betta.
why I don't do garden hybrids and aquarium strains: natural species is a history of Nature, while hybrids are just the whims of Man.

Wild specimens can take quite a while to adapt to tanks.

hmmm.. my own experience is that in a 3-4 ft tank, a strong pecking order will form, starting with the most dominant male. Even the females will pick on each other. In the wild the schools are large enough and there's sufficient room for the aggression to peter out harmlessly, but i'd stick to perhaps one male and 3-4 females in a 3 ft tank.
