Dwarf Hairgrass or Japanese Hairgrass

Just wanna ask, what's the difference between Dwarf Hairgrass and Japanese Hairgrass? Which one is less demanding? Which one spreads faster?

Japanese hairgrass is the one that curl. In my opinion both are spread growing and not demanding plant.

So can i plant them using lapis sand and at very low lighting? What about the temperature?

Japan Hairgrass needs more light (medium to very high) but is easier to grow than the Dwarf (medium to high light)variety. Temp below 28degrees for both.

Yup, I think the only difference is that Japanese hairgrass curls and does not point upwards. I was thinking of getting Japanese hairgrass, but it seems like only CRS haven carries it. Does anyone know of anywhere else?

Hi all,

Since we are on the topic of hairgrass, this is the 2nd time I am trying my luck at growing it. First time, my cherry barbs were not too kind with it and dug everything up.

Now, I am into planted shrimps tank and it's been 3 months already and I am still seeing very slow growth. Some are even covered with staghorn algae. Two weeks ago, I trimmed off the tips like what some people recommended and started dosing Potassium. Beginning to see some light green shoots here and there and looking better but still I cannot imagine that it is an easy foreground plant to grow. Or am I real lousy with this?

What should I do to give it a boost?

My tank dimensions are 36"x18"x18" running on 160W lighting at 9 hrs per day with 1 hour siesta in between. CO2 via reactor at 3bps with PH of 6.2. Substrate Seachem Oxyx Sand Black. Water change weekly 10%, treated with Seachem Prime.

Dosage of 7ml Seachem Potassium 3 times weekly, 5ml trace Florapride trace mix 2 times weekly.

Other parameters unfortunately not being monitored.

Sorry, I forgot to mention that my tank temperature is at a constant 26C because I have a chiller running.

Perhaps you need more NPK. Especially the N and P.
Mine carpeted in a month. Highlight, soil and just K and some GBSL-Green Brighty lights special+ Step one for the 1st month.

It's from ADA-a fertiliser in one of their range called exactly that. GBSL-Green Brighty Special Lights.
A few pumps a day for sand tanks and mature soil tanks.

seems like you didn't dose N at all? that might explain for stun growth. As long as you did not over dose it, it should be save for cherry shrimps. Can't comment on CRS though since never try before

N is abundant in soil setups and shrimps I dare say are more sensitive to copper than N-ammonia although it's not advised to put sensitive shrimps in new setups till at least reach the 3 week mark. Even Yamato shrimp will crawl out of 2 week tanks.

Gravel/Sand setups have no buffer for nutrients and your plants would struggle to grow well without N, P, or K not to mention trace elements.

Cherries are pretty tough with less requirement on low temperature but they still need tender loving care.

Thanks alot - I'll go get some Seachem N and P. So, I should just follow the dosage instructions.

Meanwhile, what else can I do because I am beginning to see BBA accumulating. And it is impossible to remove from the hairgrass unless I mow it down completely.
