Some recent photos from various locations. All taken handheld with Canon 40D with 100mm macro or MP-E 65 mm.

Red tent spider (Cyrtophora unicolor), about an inch long, at Sg Buloh Wetland Reserve. This spider is quite common but mostly overlooked. If you see a messy web with lots of dead leaves hanging from it, check the leaves closely to find the spider clinging to one of them.

Mantids. Very common but also not often spotted due to their camouflage. Both from Sungei Buloh

Derbid bug at Sungei Buloh. Usually found on tree trunks. Resemble tiny, squat cicadas but with funny wing position.

Spiny ant (Polyrhacis sp.) at Sg Buloh.

Beetle fly at Ang Mo Mio Town Garden West. Quite common flies on trailside vegetation.

Bird dropping mimic crab spider (Phyrnarachne ceylonicus) at Botanic Gardens. Quite easy to spot if you take the trouble to check every piece of 'bird shit' on leaves.

Chironomid midge (adult of bloodworm) at Sg Buloh. View large version here.

Common dragonfly at Lower Pierce Reservoir Park trail. view large version here.

    Budak,
Great series, so many nice bugs that I've never seen before. Love the mantis shots. By the way, how do you manage to shoot the red tent spider? Did you remove it from the web? The web is usually too messy to shoot.

I love the mantis pose! Interesting to blur the background and focus on the head area. Ready to strike!
    Cheers!

Budak: Nice photos! You have keen eyes. I probably would have missed them. Is your flash fire off-camera or on-camera?
