What insects are you shooting?? Some insects you need tripod, some others by the time you setup tripod they're gone.

For flowers, use tripod and take your time to get into the best position, they won't run away.

but your duopod can also configure into a tripod, what.

Butterflies usually appear in sunny area and usually shot at big aperture (small number) so usually can handhold or use monopod. Tripod is usually needed for spider because they're not flat like butterflies. But still there are people who shoot spiders hand held. This is a skill needed for jumping spiders.

I guess you either use monopod or handheld if you are shooting anyting that moving fast or fly or jump.

Not true, almost all the birders I know use tripod.

But for macro, it is generally true. You have no choice unless you can setup your tripod really fast or set some sort of trap. But I would like to point out that shooting with a tripod does offer a lot more options to you than just hand holding or monopod.

shooting macro with hand held is quite tough, it can be done, but have to go with a higher speed, which in turn gives you a dark/black back ground which does not appeal to some
