hi forumners.. have tested on this for 2 occations now..
as above.. if hair algae or green hair algae or even staghorn algae had been infesting your tank for a long time no matter how you manually remove them.. its time to recruit some malayan shrimps to help you clear the hair algae.

    on 2 occations :

first was my 2ft high tech rock scape.. my HC, moss and blxya japonica was infested with staghorn and hair algae.. first i introduced 10 yamatos as i heard those were the best algae eaters.. they end up eating my fish food instead..
so i bought 100 piece of malayan shrimps. in just 3 - 5 days.. almost all the hair algae and staghorn were gone..

2nd occation was my current 2ft mossy tank.. 4 days ago.. i dropped by NA and bought 45 piece of their big and healthy malayans as my moss were pretty much infested with hair algae.. in just 3 - 4 days.. most of my moss were algaeless.. most spots left with algae were very minimal.. this time round only 45 pieces!

whats more is that malayan are cheap and beatiful.. hardy as well..
here 2 picture i took during lights off(colour usually runs off after light is of) during light on, they have a deep brownish red colour.. with a golden strip running across its back.. some were even bluish!

another thing i noticed is that they seems to prefer algae to food.. i dropped in a piece of hikari algae waffer and only a few piece went for it.. the rest were busy cleaning my moss..

place to get malayan shrimps : most popular LFS have them.
C328 and Y618 have them in pieces of 50 and 100piece in a pack. while NA have healthy and big ones for you to choose yourself(but price are higher) price wise.. not really good to disclose here.. but for c328 and y618.. can get 100 piece in less than $10.

Hardiness of malayan shrimps : i would say.... hardier than the famous cherry shrimp.. i ever drop 10+ piece of malayan directly into my tank without doing any drip method and stuffs.. and they survived too.. they can tolerate up to temperature of 31C too...

hope the above metioned help you get a tank without worrying about hair algae infesting your tank.

    cheers!

welcome guys.. they are not jumpy.. and as for breeding.. they have the larva stage.. from what i know, the larva stages float on top of water for a few days before changing to miniature shrimplets.. the whole process can be done in freshwater.

This is very informative. However, Malayan shrimps succumb to death easily due to overdose from EI method

I like to add, they help to clear my dead BGA too, but a word of caution, get an air pump if you buy 50 or more shrimps for a 2 feet or less, since you have increased the bioload in the tank, I have experienced alot of shrimp death when I failed to see such an oversight.

One reason i believe was that I blasted the CO2. And my K2SO4 dose at huge amount. 8 teaspoon weekly for 5 feet. Since then, I have reduced the amount.

heres a very nicely coloured female..

i guess malayan and cherries have the same thing - male have lesser colouration on its body.. heres a suspect male.. but they still carry the beautiful red strip accross their body..

i gonna get more of them! they look so great.
