My 7 gallon tank have signs of 2 algae. Not very seriously, but I know its spreading if I don't control it soon. My front substrate is attacked by Green Blue algae, on my glass, is green spots algae.

    My set up specs:
    -18w light
    -1 bubbles of co2 every 2 sec
-lighting is on 10 hours every day
-filter I just changed to Ehiem Hang on filter. 150-380l/h
-top up water every 2 days. 1.5 litres each time

I dose Seachem Flourish occasionally. Each time I dose 1 cc/ml ( I am not sure is it the same as 1 ml) using my syringe. Hmm, anyway I can improve to stop the algae?

Now I stop dosing Flourish, and also stop my CO2 supply. Dosing excel daily. I suspect is my substrate that is causing the algae issue. Since every time I clean and vacuum the tank, I will encounter alot of mulm.

Just want to check with you guys, high organic compounds with the substrate can cause algae?

    Hi,

I think if you do regular water change, instead of topping up water, your algae problem shall go away from my personal experience.

I try chemical method of removing algae, black-out, shrimps and SAE etc.
But regular water change instead of top up do the trick. I also used nitrate/ammonia removal, help abit too.

Hmm... I think over excessive dosage of Flourish (coupled with insufficient plants & high light) will surely cause an algae boom in a tank... [Used to happen in my tanks when I first started in this hobby... ]

    Regards.

I dose Flourish only two weeks once. Water changes is done everyweek. Due to the fan and the evapouration. I have to top up water regularly.

so does it mean that if you put more plants , the chances of getting algae is very slim ?

hi comet, i not sure with blue green algae. But i battle with green spot algae awhile back and finally succeed, try reducing your lighting duration.. maybe to 8 hrs. i used seachem nitrogen and prosphurus quite good effect gsa stop coming back le. You can use toothbrush to clear the remaining gsa.

    What plant do you have?

high organic compounds with the substrate can cause algae?
I believe so because fish poo and dead leave become amonia/Amonium. Amonia/Amonium cause algae. Dossing fert does not cause algae problem, unless you dose Amonia/Amonium.

In my opinian, you should dose more nitrogen, 1ml seachem flourish in 7 galons of water only provide 0.0249ppm of nitrogen. Seachem flourish is considered as micro fert. you need to add macro element (N, P, K)

    You weekly target is
    NO3 5 - 30 ppm
    K+ 10 -30 ppm
    PO4 1 - 2 ppm

By the way BGA (Blue Green Algae) can be seen may be seen in aquariums with extremely low nitrates. Full article can be read from link below:
