there are quite a few threads here about recommended substrate (same for any plants including glosso) and gravel setup. As for glosso, I can tell you LIGHTS and CO2! good luck! [:]

oh and good nutrient control so that your beautiful glosso lawn will not become BBA nursery! []

I give them a trim every week, and of coz, removing BBA [] The idea here is not the substrate but rather the conditions for them to thrive in the tank, u need the basic things like what hwchoy pointed out as (Co2, Temp and Light) but also I look into other things like the way they are planted and how to keep them from growing upwards

    Simon,
how do you keep your glosso from growing upwards.
I have a 2 feet tank with 47 watts of lighting+application of Dr Mallick's ferts. My glosso grows to height of 4 inches. Base fert is JBL. Is the lighting strong enough? BBA and green-spot popping all over tank!
Please help me to get my glosso produce runners that run horizontally.

    Thanks,
    Zul

    Zul,

Your tank is roughly 100litres or 25 gals, right? If so, you don't have enough lights. You'll need about 75W. 2x36W PL should do it.

Which Mallick fert are you using? Mallick's LushGro Aqua has nitrates in it. That's the disadvantage. If your tank already has enough or too much nitrates... the extra nitrates is feeding the algae.

Hi CyberJoe! For more economical liquid ferts...you can try JBL ferropol and Seachem.

zulnaldo, add more lights! like vinz suggested. also when you plant you should separate them into little bunches about 2-inches long (don't need to worry about where the leaves and roots are), use a pincer and grip one end while the rest is in between the pincer, and PLUNGE it vertically into the gravel until only the very very tip is showing. Don't worry, plants are more hardy than you thought, it will soon find its way out and should start putting out crawling runners and new leaves, IF YOU HAVE ENOUGH LIGHTS.

To get a good lawn effect, plant them in a grid about 2cm apart, machiem fall in parade square fashion, make sure to ke kanan lurus. [:]

I spoke to Zul just now. His tank is only 17 gal. Subtracting substrate, 47W should be enough.
