I set up a 1 ft x 20 cm x 20 cm tank three weeks ago, using 1/2 cm of lonestar gravel, java and xmas moss tied to steel mesh for the bottom and a small wood with java moss and fern. Lighting is one 15W PL, on 3-4 hours in the evening. No filter, no fert, no fan. Houses 2 ottos, 3 tiny kuhli loaches, 2 bumblebee gobies and a number of Malayan shrimp. Water change = about 50 percent untreated tap water weekly.

What is curious is the disparate fate of Malayan shrimp in my tanks. In my main 3 fter, they mostly survive but hide as there are many fish about. My 2 fter, however, sees Malayan shrimp (but not yamatoes) dying off quite frequently. Those in the mini tank, though, are growing red and fat and I found tiny reddish ones under the wood too.

they are curious little shrimp indeed.

without water circulation and surface irritation, is there cause for concern of breeding mosquitoes?

I've seen yamato shrimps go for frozen bloodworms and live brineshrimp, I don't see why Malayans wouldn't either. From this, I suspect shrimps will eat mosquito larvae too if they can get their little claws on them.

Why use punctuation? See what a difference it makes:

A woman: without her, man is nothing.
