Great to know that besides Au, Ronnie and Sia Meng, one more hobbyist is bringing in eggs from other countries. We need more gung-ho people like Lily.
Although it can be heartbreaking when the eggs don't hatch, the excitement of seeing those that do will more than make up for it.

Hi Lily,
So how did it goes?
I am very tempted to give it a try too but is it still alright to order eggs this time round(October)? If weather not permitting, when will be the next best bet? Would like to go for the non annual though their incubation period is short & chances of getting nothing other than peat is high . Some species of non annual still made it here right? May the masters please advise.
BTW, any oversea friends out there have any non annual eggs for sale? TIA.
Gan.

Thank you for sharing the excitement with me. This is what I get for the time being for the non-annuals but I am keeping the peat for at least two weeks before I discard them. Meantime the annuals that I ordered are still incubating.
Aplocheilus lineatus-3
Rivulus tenuis Tako Talpu–10
Aphyosemion bitaeniatum– 0
Epiplatys annulatus-0
F. Gardneri N'sukka-0
Ap bitaeniatum Ojube-Ode-2
Ap poliaki Mile 29-1

Though some of my trays were ‘fry-less’, that wont stop me for buying again. Despite the short incubation period for the non annuals, I’m still able to get 10 fry from the Rivulus tenuis Tako Talpu, and I think it’s very encouraging.
I was told it’s not a good time to place any orders now as the weather in Canada is very cold ( I got mine from Canada). It’s good to take some advises from the more experienced breeders here regarding the change of weather overseas before you decide to make any purchases.

Hiya Lily, it takes money and guts to bring in eggs of new species, and to face head on with the excitement of tiny ones hatching and possible disappointment of a no-hatch. Thanks for taking that leap of faith.Originally Posted by lily
For annual eggs, the seller would indicate collection date and I would dunk (wet) the peat 2 months later. Of course, this was before I realized that incubation period is heavily influenced by climate temperature.
For non-annuals, I usually dunk the peat immediately.
FWIW, I usually wet/dry/store that same peat at least 3 times... I try to be an optimist :wink: and after that, I recycle the 'old peat' for grindal cultures.
About those eggs you received;
Aphyosemion bitaeniatum– 0 (which BIT is this?)
Epiplatys annulatus-0 (I get zero frys from all my purchases.)
F. Gardneri N'sukka-0 (I have 2 trios if you want to adopt.)
Ap bitaeniatum Ojube-Ode-2 (Could you verify with seller if the name is Ijebu-Odé??)
Ap poliaki Mile 29-1 (NICE fish!)

That’s the good Lily! Seems like you have better luck then me. It took me 9 tries before I got some fry from the non annual. But I think it is worth it. Imagaine the amount of money spent for the first 8 tries. The last try was done on an exchange, I have 3~4 more non annuals coming after the cold season. One of the eggs is from wild fish! Can’t wait to receive the eggs!Originally Posted by lily

Hello Ronnie,
There is no way I can contact the seller, Karl Walter. I seek help from a friend in Canada and he called him on the phone to place my order..
I tried writing him an email but was rejected, seem like he don’t have a valid email account.
The Ap bitaeniatum Ojube-Ode came as a 'bonus' from Mr Walter, I dont remember placing order for it.. :wink:
I may be wrong about the name, give me some time to figure out, ok?

Hello Sia Meng,
From your what you said, I am indeed luckier then you. I got more fry then what I posted previously. I've 2 Epiplatys annulatus fry now, so glad my money didn't go down the drain!
Now, what worriy me is, will they grow?
Lily Choo
Hey Ronnie,
I will be glad to accept your offer for the trios of Epiplatys annulatus but I just collected 2 fry so I think I will wait and see...
Thank you for the kind offer.

You need your reading glasses as much as I do ... it's 2 trios of Fundulopanchax gardneri N'sukka , NOT Epiplatys annulatus!!!
I'll also bring along some Simpsonichthys constainciae "Barra de São Joãoo" to Kwek Leong's place, and both you and Sia Meng can collect from there.

Oops... Age is catching up fast with me, sorry.. I think I may have collected the wrong fry with the right name too. Can anyone tell me how does a Epiplatys annulatus fry looks like??Originally Posted by RonWill

Just to state the obvious, Lily, did you label your hatching trays as you empty your peat into it? If not, how would you know which fry is which?
I've pretty bad memory and always follow a simple sequence;
1. Use masking tape to make a label and make sure the name is correct.
2. Add fresh, overnight water to tray.
3. Add peat with eggs.
4. Add airstone.
For shipment with multiple species of the same genus, I repeat this sequence one bag at a time!. This is to avoid confusion (to myself) and to minimize the chances of names/trays/eggs/frys getting mixed up.
You should note now that females of the same species, eg: Fp. GAR "N'sukka" and GAR "Baissa" are indistinguishable (short of a DNA test).
Same applies to Ap. BIV and BIT females as well, so be very careful not to get your 'known good' location codes corrupted as you're handling 3 species of Aphyosemion;
Ap. bitaeniatum (no code?)
Ap. bitaeniatum Ojube-Ode
Ap. poliaki Mile 29
oh... and a fry looks just like any other fry!! (gotcha!)
Seriously tho, I haven't had any luck with my shipments of Epiplatys and had zero-hatch with them.
