Noticed a LFS in Woodlands having Java Fern with lots of plantlets. They just started the tank about a month back.

Anyone knows why there are so many plantlets? I have this problem before and it's an eye sore actually.

I thought it's a good thing. That means your plants are growing. I usually just detach them from the leaves it they become a bit too untidy.

Alternatively, I cut the entire leaf blade and tie it to another driftwood.

    Cheers,

If you see it you will know why! Black roots all over the plant like bayan tree.

How to detach it from the parent? No easy, leh! Must snip it off!

I don't think it's due to the plant growing well. Something must be wrong.

There is this expert from Pet Safari (I forgot the name). He mentioned that if plant are not growing well they tend to try to migrate by reproduing themselves!

    kc,

I used to just pluck them off the parent leaf quite easily.

My tank full of Java ferns (5 types now) and the roots comes off with the plantlets when I pull them out. Anyway, just cut the roots off or push them down. Maybe this won't look so untidy.

I agree with the "poor condition cause lots of plantlets" theory. I would say it is not something that is very desirable...looks messy. I understand that farms propagate them by tying a mature leaf on dirftwood or on moist soil, with the underside facing up. Soon, lots of plantlets will grow.

benny, are the five types of Java ferns,

    1) Normal
    2) Broad leaf
    3) Narrow leaf
    4) Windelov
    5) Tropica?

Well no. 1 to 4 plus 1 species that looks like Tropica, given by a friend so can't be sure. Anyway, I mix them all together.
