    Dear all,

It's been one crazy night where I managed to pull eggs from all my tanks... all except the stingy BIV Funge.

The Blue Phanchax were the wild ones (F-0?) mentioned in this thread.

    Oh blimey!!

I've updated the Wild Aplochelius page. Enjoy!... I'm gonna grab some shuteye!

That must be the "Mother of all Eggs"

    Hey, Ronnie

You and your fish sure are fast workers. I haven't seen anything in my Wild Aplochelius tanks yet. But I saw 2 of my female Java Medakas carrying clusters of eggs in their abdomens. I haven't got the slightest idea how they breed so if anyone can enlighten me on this, I would appreciate it very much.

Congrats Ronnie on the blue panchax eggs!.

KL I found a Java Medaka carrying eggs in one of my tanks, and Adip very gently separated them from the mother and put it into a tank with aged water. They hatched in a couple of days, but I was totally unprepared with food for them and I lost the fry.

Otherwise the mother carries the eggs until they hatch and fry swim free. No further parental care. I have had no further experience with them.

Thanks, Madan. I'm amazed that the eggs can be separated from the mother without any harm coming to eggs or mother. By the way, I've been doing some research on this fish and it seems they are no longer classified as killies. They belong to the group Oryzias. I found lots of information on Oryzias latipes (Japanese Medakas) but very little on Oryzias melastigmus.

Life is short, play hard.... I guess the fishes realized it too!

A quick one before I go get another nap... my body clock is 'upsidedown' now, buring the midnite oil at egg picking.

For Aplo, use floating mop about 6 inches and spread out the mop strands. Aplo will deposit their eggs all over the place.

Medakas carry their clusters now as they're insecure where to deposit their eggs... so quit staring at them already!

Reduce water level to about 6 inches, dump in the moss and feed as usual. BTW, egg cluster carry between 3 to 6 eggs at any one time.

Kwek Leong, I think the main thing that's causing this 'mass spawning' is the temperature and it's triggering propagating instincts!, of course, I could also be wrong!

Over here, it has been raining quite frequently, hence, pretty cool and windy the past couple of days. Last nite, I took a reading off ALL my tanks... temp is 24~25º Celcius!

Even the aphy. are busy at it again and again and ag....

Taking advantage of the cool spell, I've just set up spawning tank for the Goa Killies and hope for the best.

BTW, all breeding tanks and incubation/hatching trays are dosed with PMBB/Peat Ball's concoction.... and I'm obviously very pleased with the results I'm getting... if only those d*mned BIVs are a little more 'co-operative'!

PS: Kwek Leong, I think we can go into business selling PMBB Ball's Juice... just throw a little smoke and describe it as "viagra for fish"!

Thanks Madan, it was a very pleasant experience and a nice change from those tiny tiny eggs!

I'm also surprised by the rapid embryol development...

There's a few clear eggs that's probably 'resting'. The others are developing fast and for a moment, I thought I saw one that was 'eyed-up' (but don't trust tired eyes!).

But something unfortunate happened though. I moved the trio of Goa Killies to a spawning tank and have an acrylic cover over it. Sadly, the male found the cutout (hole) where the air tubing is, and he became an 'immortal' by the time I found him ... and the 2 girls are wondering where their 'hubby' went!

If you look at the pic, there's a 4 inch clearance between water surface and tank top. Water is only 3 inches and I'm quite surprised that the male made it that far... <sigh>

Kwek Leong, you'd better have a cover over your Goa's tank!

Thanks for the warning, Ronnie but I don't have the Goa killie. You took all of them, remember? What I have from Madan are the Java Medaka and the new unidentified Aplochelius.

... and I thought there was 2 trios.

Meanwhile, of the 2 remaining females, one wedged herself under the driftwood and went to killie heaven.

    Aaaaaaarrrrrrrrrggggggggghhhhhh !!! ... sorry

    Dear all,

Alpo Panchax frys have hatched... I see 3 rather black-bodied bugger swimming around.

There're still a good number of unhatched eggs, which I think is atypical to killies... they don't all hatch out at the same time!

    Have also updated the page;

    Enjoy

Aplocheilus panchax is the only killi indigenous to Singapore. Does anyone here have a local specimen? How does it compare with that from India (Madan's catch)?
why I don't do garden hybrids and aquarium strains: natural species is a history of Nature, while hybrids are just the whims of Man.
