Hi! I'm new but have been lurking around reading posts for a couple of days now. I'm sort of new to killifish too. I have 2 pairs of Fundulopanchax and 4 Aplocheilus Lineatus Golden. I'm not sure if my A. Lineatus are male or female because I can't find a picture on the net with both sexes. Do any of you know how to tell the difference?

This is my second go at killifish keeping and I'm excited. The first time, I had to do a lot of moving around and wasn't sure if the fish would live so I gave them away. (Sadly, they died in a couple of days.)

Any "beginner" info any of you can give would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks!
    Heather

Welcome Heather, glad you can join us from Virginia. Your nearest killie-buddy in this forum ought to be Debra, in Maryland.

We all 'new' too, and looking forward to learning something new everyday about our killies. So don't worry about 'silly questions'... there's no such thing as a 'smart' one

As for sexing, it's usually very obvious with Fundulopanchax and less so with Aplocheilus Lineatus Golden. Males are generally bigger, with deeper shade of gold while females are smaller and not as intense.

Sia Meng has kept lots of Aplocheilus Lineatus Golden before and I'm sure he can pinpoint more details.

HTH (Hope This Helps) and have a pleasant stay. BTW, how did you find our little corner?

    Re: New here

Hi and thanks for the welcome!

I'm pretty sure one of my Aplocheilus Lineatus Golden is a male because it is almost completely covered with yellow. Another has a yellow fin on the bottom and a yellow tail, but not it's body. Another has very little yellow (almost orange) tips on all it's fins. The other has no color at all and is almost transparent.

I think I found this site by doing a search for information on the Aplocheilus Lineatus Golden. I was linked to one of the posts in the forum and decided to go exploring.

    Hi,Heather!
Where are you from in VA? We may not be so far apart as I am only an hour from the Va line, about 2 hrs from Norfolk.
Heather, I do hope that you have room in your house for more tanks, for killies have a way of filling up a house, makes you cut corners in buying so that you can pay a killie bill....even gets to the place you beg your hubby(IF YOU HAVE ONE) for a killie instead of a diamond ring! The beauty of killies is very addictive. and oh so much fun!!!!
    Welcome!

Hi Debbear! I'm on the other side of VA, close to TN and KY. Probably about 8 hours from you. I am already addicted and trying to find sources for obtaining killiefish. The local pet stores don't carry killiefish and in the off chance they do, they only have the Aplocheilus Lineatus Golden. I think that is a beautiful fish too, I just don't want my entire killi collection to consist of one color .

LOL, I'm already bribing my husband to find and buy more killies . I had him go 3 1/2 hours with me this past weekend in search of a microworm culture. He hates to travel, so.... I am trying to talk him into building a shelf/stand for the killiefish I hope to obtain soon, but....

Thanks for the welcome and I'm looking forward to learning a lot here!

    Heather and Deb,

I suppose you 2 probably don't realise it but when Heather wrote that she's 8 hours from Deb, to a Singaporean, that would be as good as living in another country or another planet

Singapore is so small, 8 hours in any direction we would have to carry our passports with us. To the both of you, 8 hours away would probably mean "neck of the woods"

    Heather ,
Not so very far, considering that we met on a Singaporean forum.

Loh K L, passport? What's that? We went to Mexico to visit my husband's sister, which is a good 48hrs drive( non-stop) from here and all we had to have to cross the border was our driver's license and birth certificate. Although,it is getting harder to cross borders now since the 9/11 terrorist attack, we may not be able to do that any more.

    Loh K L & Deb,

I thought about posting something about the distance being inappropriate since it is a Singaporean forum, but....

So basically anywhere you go, you have to have a passport? I definitely don't have one, but I've barely been to the Canadian border so I've never had the need.

    Ron,

Actually, no we didn't. No one knew where I could find live food. I found some frozen angel fish food, but nothing really for killies. I'll go over and visit the other thread.

    Heather,

Singapore is so small, theorically, you can get to anywhere from anywhere within an hour. It doesn't take 8 hours to get to another country because 2 hours in any direction would mean crossing borders. Up north is Malaysia and I can usually reach the checkpoint from my house within 45 minutes. South would be Indonesia but we need a boat or ferry to get across to there.

We're an island and we are so small we appear as a tiny dot on a world map. It may sound strange to you and Deb but people living in small countries have different perceptions of distance. What is near to someone like you would be far to us. Teo's Aquatics, a farm specialising in aquatic plants is located somewhere north of the island, about maybe 30 km from the centre of Singapore by car. To a Singaporean, that is far. Some would say, very far.

    Hello Heather,

I am very new to killies too but already in love with them. I find life more interesting rearing the killies, on the other hand, I may be wrong but whatever it is; welcome to the forum, hope I am not late for the welcoming.
