Hi there,

I manage to buy some of this plant from Bioplast about a month ago. It grew quite well except about a couple of days ago, I noticed a bald patch developing. As if, the shrimps or fish have been biting it off.

The Monosolenium tenerum is planted on a stainless steel mesh in its original form (when I bought it). So I decided to untie it last night and and reattach back to the mesh minus all the brown/dead (i think) bits. Sounds like the logical thing to do. Yes?

I'm new to Monosolenium tenerum and I am wondering if others here have any success with growing lush batches of this nice looking plant. I am also wondering how I can achieve the look in this picture:

http://www.tropica.dk/catalog/images...ium1_large.jpg

Do you all think that there is some rock/driftwood that it is attached to? Or do you think the plant will just pile up since it is so lush and heavy, and achieve that look.

Btw, I am very interested in Mosses too. I saw the post saying that it will be sold during the Killifish lover gathering. I would love to get my hands on the "Erect Moss" but I feel bad imposting as a Killifish lover and turning up to just buy it. I'm hope my patience will pay off and also my investment in a chiller!

Anyway, I like the quality of the posts and articles here. Hope to gather good advice from all who participate!

Cheers,

Roger Thien

Hi, Roger,

Welcome to the forum.

No one said anything about having to be a killifish lover before one can buy the Erect Moss during the gathering so don't worry about being a imposter. You are not an imposter. You were honest and open about your interests and in my book, that makes you an honest person. Please turn up at the gathering and even if you don't like killies, that shouldn't stop us from getting to know each other better and becoming friends.

If you already have a chiller, you shouldn't have any problems growing the Erect Moss. I've tried growing the Monsolenium tenerum once too but didn't have much success. They were growing in my tanks but I never achieved the sort of growth and colour depicted in the picture you directed us to. But I do believe the plant should do well in cold waters.

If you bought the plant from Bioplast, you would have noticed they were growing much better in the display tank inside the shop. In the display tanks that are in the front of the shop facing the carpark, the plant doesn't seem to be as green and many of them have brown leaves. I once asked the fish shop owner about this and he said that in order to grow the plant well, you need to have a heavy fertilisation regime and well-controlled lighting. He claimed that they weren't growing as well in the display tanks at the front of the shop because they were exposed to too much sunlight.

One interesting fact about the M. tenerum is that they have hair-like structures on the undersides of the leaves known as rhizoids. They look like fur. If you don't look closely, you would think they are algae.

Mr Loh,

Thanks a lot for sharing your experiences.

Let me try my luck and see if I can succeed with the Monosolenium tenerum. If I do, I will share my tips/regiment with the forumers here. And if I have a lot of it in my hands, I will share the plant with the rest for a token sum. It'll help with my electricity bill (for the chiller).

The rhizoids did fool me for a while. I thought the plant was attacked by algae. Seems like a good sign that there is an abundance of rhizoids to absorb nutrients.

Thanks for inviting me along to the meeting. At the moment, I might have to do some travelling for business during that time so I may not be able to attend. Anyway, hopefully there is another meeting and with others offering their "erect moss" for exchange/sale too.

Have some questions about Moss for you. Will start in another thread/post.

Thanks again!

Cheers,

Roger Thien

Hello Roger,

I saw this plant at the Tropica booth during Aquarama and I think it looks stunning... I was unable to get it then because my girlfriend was complaining that it costs too much and was grumbling to go home. So in the end I had to leave empty-handed...

I would really appreciate it very much if you can sell me some when you do some trimming. I'd love to try my hands on this beautiful plant!

Kevin,

I don't think Roger will have enough of the plant to sell any to you. The plant grows real slow and hardly needs trimming. The more of it you get, the better they look so I doubt Roger would want to trim even when he grows a lot of them.

It so happens I may be able to get my hands on quite a fair amount of the plant soon. I'm not sure about this so this isn't a promise. But if there's enough interest in the plant, I will try and bring it to the gathering.

Kevin/Timebomb,

Currently, I do not have the enough to share or sell. So far, it doesn't seem that easy to grow but then again maybe the environment is not correct.

The person whom I bought it from told me to give it lots of light, cold water (have chiller) and adequate nutrients in order to achieve good results.

Only time can tell!

Cheers,

Roger

Hi Mr Loh,
I managed to get this plant through PohSan at the gathering. I was unable to attend. Tied it on a mesh but the plant doesn't seem to be growing well. In fact some parts have turned brown.

Tank Temp: 27 degrees celsius (using fans)
Lighting: 144 watts for 50 gallon tank, 10 hours per day
Co2: 3 bubbles per second
Fertilization: Seachem Fluorish every 2 weeks

What seems to be the problem?

Kevin,

I'm probably wrong but I think brown leaves in mosses, ferns and liverworts are an indication of too high a temperature. You said your tank is 27 degrees C but aquarium thermometers can be off sometimes. I suspect your temperature is higher than what you think.

Other than that, I don't see what's wrong with your parameters. To be frank, I managed to grow the Monosolenium tenerum but I never achieved the sort of growth like what they were in Sam Yick's tanks. But if I were you, I add more iron. That always helps

I am trying to grow this as well. Another list member told me he had great success, and two of the factors seemed to be keeping the temp below 80 degrees F. and keeping the GH up somewhat.

I am having a good bit of growth in a new 30 gallon tank with 72 watts of 6700 K. PC lighting, KH 4 and GH 6. I upped the GH to 6 after hearing about hardness maybe being a success factor with this stuff.

My history with this plant is to get good initial growth and then the stuff turns brown or clear and disintegrates, so I'm expecting, but not hoping for that in this new tank.

I had that happen in my 240 gallon with halide lighting, but a mutual friend of Kwek Leong's and mine here in Atlanta grows the stuff like crazy in her 250 watt halide lit 92 gallon tank, so I know it can be grown under Halides. this 92 gallon is a planted discus tank with temps at about 82-83 F., so go figure?

I saw a tank in Sam Yick at UE that has good success on Monosolenium tenerum. The tank parameters are as follows:

-Water is cooled by aircon in the shop
-NO3 is 5ppm
-PO4 is not detectable
-Fe is 0.5
-KH 2
-PH ? (can't test by the time I got the water sample home) but I think it is 6.6.

Hope this helps

Re: Monosolenium tenerum - Experiences/Advice

My success with M.tererum is less than stellar, despite it's invasive qualities the fish shop person said it would be as. A picture after 3-4 months of growth and since this it has grown some but not spectacularly. I have it in a 15 gal. tank with a HOB 145 gph filter and an airsone as well with an 18" T8 light, full spectrum. It is a unheated tank that currently is most often at 68-69F that can be 80F in the summer. A baby platy lives in that aluminum cage, and adjacent java moss and is the only one of many to avoid being eaten. I have heard that Flourish Excel kills liverworts and other mosses. I will try another liquid fert soon myself.
