hi domzz, i am also newbie and just here to share w u.

I have a 1.5ft in my office cubicle.

    - Lighting : 18W x 2 PL, 11W x 2 PL
    - DIY Co2 (Coke bottle, yeast, bicarbonate soda)
    - Dolphin Internal filter. (Flow rare 200l/h)
    - Cheap $15 sand as gravel, no base fert.
    - Temp 25C
    - Plants :-
    a) Tried riccia, but difficult to maintain, switch to glosso, not so bad.
    b) drift wood with java moss
    c) rock with taiwan moss
    d) background with Didiplis diandra, stargrass, Hygrophila polysperma "ausgtifolia" (typo)
    e) an Echinodorus sp in the front corner, not sure what sp.

IMO, for 1.5ft, try to go for plants with smaller leaves, will make your tank look more spacious. One or two bigger leaved plant can be in for contrast.

CO2 is not a must, but i think most plants will be happier with that. DIY is cheap.

pl light means compact fluorescent while fl is normal fluorescent tube. pl is more compact in design so takes up less space. a 36w fl is 4' while a 36w pl is about 17".

use the search function on top right to look for more threads on pl and fl lights.

dormzz, try using the search engine (google or whatever) before setting up planted tanks, i studied for 3 months before seriously starting a planted tank.
Its good to have a wealth of information before starting one, so people wont "pek check" when asked such "simple" questions.

Here are some links i used for reference

www.aquahobby.com (check out the tanks of the months, they have a few small planted tanks)

www.thekrib.com (i'm sure everyone knows this one)

    http://www.frii.com/~gbooth/AquaticConcepts/Co2/
    (benefits of co2)

    enjoy!

    Lorba,
Your lighting is simply GREAT! My 2.5 ft tank got only 3 x 18 of FL(total 54w), even riccia at the bottom can bubbles (not very thick, though).

I wonder how you squeezed in 2 fl which is 2 ft into a 1.5 ft tank, not to mention you have another 2 x 11 PL light.

yoz kc, not fl... both are 1.5ft light holder, so 2 x 18W PL and 2 x 11W PL.

Before the 2 x 18 added, glosso looks like bean sprout, now is better. Also the DD needs more light. If you flip thru Amano's World book, he has a 1.5ft with 104W worth of lighting over the head. Although i seriously think that wattage shouldn't be the actual we measure.

Its an Ocean Free curved edged tank that comes with its own light hood. I got the 2nd one (18x2) from NA. Kc, if you DIY the light hood, i am sure you can put in much much more.

Pic? Not so soon, have to wait a while before glosso is covering the floor and the DD grows into a thicket.

    Domzzz,

Don't put in too many shrimps/fishes at one go as your tank is still establishing the nitrogen cycle.
Vincent - AQ is for everyone, but not for 'u' and 'mi'.
Why use punctuation? See what a difference it makes:
A woman, without her man, is nothing.
A woman: without her, man is nothing.
