are they different from the regular platy? I see them everywhere, some even as feed.
why I don't do garden hybrids and aquarium strains: natural species is a history of Nature, while hybrids are just the whims of Man.

there r many species in the platy family... the common ones would be the red platy.. as for feeder fish, they r mostly guppies or your typical 'longkang' aka drain fishes

Hi Simon, would they really be different species (sunset vs red) or just hybrid varieties? These days I'm not very keen on varieties (man-made sort) that's why I'm giving up on guppies (real wild guppies could be interesting) and things like that.

you can find a lot of surprises in feeder fish here.

i had seen the platy in the pic above, had seen mickey mouse platy too, now i have a myrid of colours in my tank coz the feeders are fully grown male adult guppies, there was once i bought a bagful of snakehead babies as feeders, had seen tiger barbs used as feeder also.

next time perhaps they use LH frys if there are too much.

If u really like to have wild guppies, u just dumped or mix different strains of guppies u have in a same tank, u will notice after few generations, all your frys will be "rubbish" aka similar to wild guppies.

Its so easy to destroy probably years of selective breeding.

ahem... long long ago... when I was a little boy []

I used to catch longkang guppies along Orchard Road, in a small longkang (around 2ft wide) in front of Palace Renaissance (the high class mall). The longkang is very fast flowing about 6-inch deep. Lots of longkang guppies which you can easily scoop as they swim against the current. Very clean and clear water and the guppies look like the wild specimens in the books. They have slim bodies with colour patches and no fancy tails.

    sigh... wish I am 8 again [] [] []
