    Hi folks,
I will be getting a young pair of Betta rutilans from Tony Terceira next
week and am curious if anyone has raised these and could give advice as
to tank setup, food, temp, etc. This is a gift to my wife, and I want to make
sure I provide them a happy home. Thanks.

    Hi Bill,

My knowledge in the captive husbandry of wild bettas has been pretty dismal but nevertheless I do know of some sites with great information as to how to care for these wild bettas. A friend of mine says that these newly acquired wild bettas must be kept in a shady spot with least interference. Feeding them should initially be in the form of daphnias. Then slowly wean them over to tubifex over the next few weeks. In a batch of say 10 to 20 fishes usually the weaker ones will die off pretty quick. The tougher ones are those that have a higher chance of survival. In every import of wild bettas that I've had the chance to see, many, if not at least 70% of those actually die off from secondary infections such as fungus or from improper housing conditions. They require slightly acidic water. Addition of sea almond leaves, or oak leaves, if you're from the States would be good. Keep the filtration to a minimum leaving the least amount of disturbance caused by the bubbles. Sponge filters suffice for their filtration requirements.

Here's the URL on the IBC Species Maintenance Program site.
    http://www.ibc-smp.org/species/rutilans.html
http://www.ibc-smp.org/articles/voor...t_coccina.html The 2nd site tells you alot on how to care for bettas from the coccina group, of which rutilans is a member.

In any case, the best person for you to ask on their care would be Tony himself.
    Hope it helps.

    Betta rutilans advice, OT

    Thanks for the info, Jianyang
Tony is currently at the WCW show and can't be reached. I do intend to
ask him about their keeping. When talking to doctors, I like to have a
second opinion, so I posted to the forum

    Thanks again,

    Bill

    Hi,

I believe a few of forumers here have experience in keeping them. In my case, I used a small 1 ft tank running on sponge filter. In the bare tank, I put driftwood+java fern + moss..plus peat in a bag..some floating plants...water is tea color and i put it beside the window(natural lighting).

I didn't have paitience, but this type of dwarf wild betta should be able to spawn insuch set up.

Betta rutilans is quite aggressive compare to Betta coccina, when they are kept in the supplier's tank, usually only a few pc of them have perfect finage...normally hundreds of them are kept in a tank, to minimize the fighting.

    Stormhawk,

labyrinth fish(a few exception like chocolate gouramy) actually stand much higher survival rate compare to other asian fish as they are much easier to transport...with proper treatment of course.

    Cheers,

My setup for wild betta is quite similar to MrTree`s.

I guess the best way are to keep them in a small tank filled with plants like javamoss and some leaf for shelter (oakleaf). I use this setup for my Betta coccina. I feed them Sera GVG-mix but even some frozen food too.

These fishes do more move like a snake than a fish so they crawl through dense vegetation. Some use filmtubes for shelter or a place for bubblenest.

Good luck, Betta rutilans are a very nice Betta!

    Betta rutilans advice, OT

I would like to thank all for the great advice! Tony informs the fish will arrive this Monday. My current quarters for them: 2 gallon fishbowl with
filtered rain water/tapwater (50/50) sponge filter with bag of peat resting
on it, some java moss, lots of hornwort, water sprite and phyllanthus
fluitans floating on the top, sitting in north window. Hope they like their
    new home

    Thanks again,

My Wilds have different setup depending on what kind of Bettas they are.
For my B.Rutilans, I keep 2 pairs in a 1.2ft tank which has much hiding space. But so far no signs of breeding.
    Anybody have ever bred them?
