I really have no idea, didn't think much of it at that time. But what he said was that now only can sell these small boon, larger one the gm don't allow.

    Re: Daphnia Culturing

There must be a reason other than preventing mosquito breeding, since raising tiny Moina boons are not much different from raising Daphnia. Maybe for Daphnias there are stricter environmental rules to follow?

If big boons will no longer be available to fishes, but only Moinas, that will be somewhat equivalent to humans being deprived of durians and having to make do with rambutans instead, lol.

    Re: Daphnia Culturing

Yeah I got this reply too from the people at Polyart. Apparently, they don't stock Moina because they are considered unclean since they are cultured in run off from pig, duck and chicken farms.

Since there is no longer pig farming in Singapore, I guess they are mostly cultured using chicken or duck droppings in large mud ponds. Perhaps it's just a rumor passing from one LFS to another, because they are still supplied to several LFS around the island. The only thing is that only a few LFS stock them.

As for the "big bad boons", we now have adult brine shrimp, which are red and just as active as those "big bad boons".

    Re: Daphnia Culturing

All my search and 'research' so far only points to a gloomy picture when it comes to big boons.

But so far, I can see that only Uncle Ronnie (Ronwill) has the most practical experience and interest in this area.

Haha please, its a question of which life food he doesn't have experience with... Anyway there ought to still be one or two wild populations in singapore shouldn't there?

    Re: Daphnia Culturing

I am sure other seniors (like yourself and Stormhawk) also have vast experience in various live fish foods. Uncle Ronnie impressed me a lot with his interest in boons as shown in his earlier posts.

Personally, I have no interest in all the other live foods, be it adult sea monkeys, giant maggots, or whatever. My sole interest is only in those 'big bad boons' aka Daphnia.

You might be able to find them in undisturbed ponds, probably in the central catchment area, but chances are slim. Perhaps Pulau Ubin might turn up some better results.

    Re: Daphnia Culturing

    Thanks for the suggestion.

For someone like me who really want to get my hands on some 'big bad boon' starter, it is worth the effort to hunt them out.
The main reason why I prefer live culture samples is that it is best for my learning process. Reasoning being if I can't overcome all the difficulties to keeping a live culture going, there's even less chance of me succeeding by hatching. There's really no point in hatching.

Maybe some fish hobbyists in JB may have some samples to sell?

Anyway, er, hatching is the easiest part tetra, its keeping it going that is difficult.

    Re: Daphnia Culturing

My top priority is to evolve or identify a method to keep a colony healthy and happy. I know this must come with a lot of trial and error through time. And that is why I am keen to go through the process of learning. Hatching the eggs may be the easiest thing in the world, but hatching is not my priority. I need to crash a lot of colonies and learn from that before I will try hatching the eggs.

    You're too kind, Ted.

My interest has more to do with a bad itch that I can't reach!! Funnies aside, which serious fish-keeper wouldn't want to provide a variety of live foods to their fishes, seeing them grow healthy, robust and well conditioned for breeding... and what else can be cleaner than home-cultured feeds?? All this becomes more obvious when you have itsy bitsy teeny weeny fry to care for.

Like I said, gimme some time to sort things out. Hopefully, I'll have those mean big bad momma boons for show-and-tell in one of my scheduled Sharing Sessions at you-know-where

You are salivating after Uncle Ronnie's 'big bad boons' like a big fish?

Of course he will be protecting them like a father Betta protecting the Betta fries.. LOL..

I'm not liable for those who don't make it past the electrified fence and to thwart further scheming, the loot is not in that 'palace'!!

However, let's not digress too far from the subject and if any readers stumble upon additional sources (or already silently maintaining Daphnia cultures), do PM me. There really is much potential to this tiny understated animal.

    Re: Daphnia Culturing

Rare to see mods going OT Anyway I've asked Ronnie a similar question before, but wouldn't freshwater brine shrimp be similar? Or even the salt one, at least that one's capable of sustained reproduction
