    Hi all,

My search abilities are a bit limited. Could some kind person please post a link to instructions for building moss walls, or summarize them here?

I have a 20G (12"X24"X18" tall) tank I want to set up, and have a fair amount of Java moss lying around. I just don't know what you are using as a substrate structure, and how to get a solid fill in a reasonable time.

Is Java Moss the wrong thing to start with?

    Hi Wright,
Java moss wall can be a little bit too messy. I did a Java Moss wall before and it didn't really turn out that well(maybe I was still a newbie in moss wall at that time ). Perhaps, you would like to try Taiwan moss if your country's LFS imports in. Taiwan moss is a really nice moss for a moss wall. However, this is just my 2 cents worth.

    Hope it helps.

And Kwek Leong recently did a very nice moss wall, he is the best person to answer you question.

    cheers

    Wright,
Java Moss can get quite thick and messy. Christmas, Taiwan or Singapore Moss would make a nicer moss wall.

Wright, you can skip my link. That moss wall failed so miserably, I'm ashamed to even think about it. Shortly before the 'wall came tumbling down', it was host to every imaginable species of algae.

Damn if I know what KL does to his mosses Pep talk

I think KL has an article on creating a moss wall posted up on Aquarticles.

    Thanks, folks.

Guess I'll wait until I can get some better moss, based on this information.

I may look for some decorative burnt cork as a background and just stick a few plants onto it, for now.

Wright, good ol' cork bark works wonders as a background compared to a plastic mesh overgrown with mosses. Stick in some java ferns and java moss all over the nooks and crannies and you get an instant natural-looking background.

If I'm not wrong, I remembered reading an article in TFH regarding the use of cork bark as a background. The author was growing java ferns and mosses, including small anubias as anchor plants on the bark's surface. He didn't use anything to hold them down. Just squeeze 'em where you want 'em.

As a matter of fact, I do have a photocopy of that article. If you like I could make a set of copies for you.

    Jianyang,

Thanks. I just got back from checking the cork price at the local Ace Hardware store. A two-pack of 12"X12"X1/2" was US$8.99, and I would have to buy 2 packages to cover the back of the 2'X1.5' tank. Unless I can get to Reno, soon, and find it cheaper, I'll just have to put it off for now.

Here I was thinking you fellas get it cheaper in the States but I guess cork's a pretty expensive material to start with. It costs quite a bit just to buy a big enough piece to cover the back of a 2 ft tank here in SG.

Expensive if you are not in Portugal or Spain, I guess.

I was planning to fabricate the wall with 1' square tiles. Single pieces of "cork" big enough to cover the whole back would be fabricated stuff that is some mixture of an unknown glue and cork chips. Real bark sheets can be ordered from orchid places, but are still way beyond my budget, I think.

I may just paint the back black or something dark, for now, which puts nothing questionable actually in the water. I know the decorative burnt tiles work OK, because Tom Barr used to describe their benefits when we were both going to the SFAS meetings.

That isn't right. How can we let our Chief Bloviator wait? .

Let me have your mailing address through PM, Wright and I'll send some Taiwan Moss right away.

We do have whole bark sheets available for sale here in SG but they cost a bomb to get. Buying a single piece big enough to cover the back wall of a 3-footer can easily set one back by at least $70.

That kind of money could get ya at least 4 species of killies in egg form.
