    Hi, folks,

I was working around the Old Airport Road this morning. Had some free time so I decided to drop over at Kingfisher Aquarium for a chat with Ian, the owner. Whilst I was there, I picked up a plant which, as the subject heading described, has small leaves but a gigantic body. I was amazed when Ian said it was an Echinodorus. I checked with Google and Ian's right. The plant is known as an Echinodorus harbich. It's supposed to be a mutation of E. cordifolius. Here are some pictures.

    First, the leaves:

    Now, the body:

I don't know about you but it reminds me of some monster's egg pouch or something. What do you call this part of the plant anyway?

For those who are interested, Kingfisher has one more stalk for sale.

Looks like no echino I know though.... and I recall E. harbich is distinctly unlike what is pictured... Looks more like some member of the Nymphaecae family – some Nuphar sp. or a member of the Nymphoides genus, which is an allied family.

    Kwek Leong,
I have to agree with Budak. It is not an Echinodorus and definitely not E. harbich.

KL, I'm not sure what this plant is but I think that big fat part is the tuber

budak's right. the stem looks almost exactly like my Nymphoides indica. it should be a stem not tuber as you can see the remains of old leaf stalks.
why I don't do garden hybrids and aquarium strains: natural species is a history of Nature, while hybrids are just the whims of Man.

I think it Nymphoides species too. I always cut away the tuber and plant it. The leaves should grow much bigger than that (3~4 times) after a few weeks in water.

Gee, that's embarrassing How is it I can't tell an Echinodorus from a Nymphaecae. I should have known better, what with the massive tuber on the plant.

Thanks for the enlightenment, guys. I was at Kingfisher again this morning and I got Ian to buy me coffee as punishment for giving me the wrong information
